During the Season 2 finale of the British-American horror TV series on Showtime, Dorian Gray, played by Reeve Carney, and Lily Frankenstein, played by Billie Piper, have stated that they are the new breed of immortals out to rule the world.
It was Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway, who first saw the evil in Lily who seems to have convinced Dorian to follow her wishes. Towards the end of the Season 2, they are shown dancing on a ballroom soaked in their own blood.
In the first season of Penny Dreadful, Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, and Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, with the help of Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Harnett, endeavored to find the missing daughter of Sir Malcolm Murray, Mina.
The big bad in Season 1 is a vampire-like creature who has been holding Mina captive with the help of her lady vampires.
During the second season, the trio of Vanessa, Malcolm, and Ethan, with the help from Victor Frankenstein, battled with a witch coven married to Lucifer, who wanted to get Vanessa into their fold but failed.
Thus far, there are no details yet on who will be the big bad in the upcoming Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful,” but based on the statements of Lily and Dorian, they seem likely to take over that mantle and give the protagonists the fits.
Worlds apart
Also during the Season 2 finale, it was seen that the triumvirate of Vanessa, Malcolm, and Ethan were physically worlds apart after overcoming the challenges that came their way.
Vanessa was left alone in the house of Sir Malcolm in London though it appears that she intends on leaving it too.
Ethan Chandler admitted to Scotland Yard officials that he was responsible for all the grisly murders in London as a werewolf and was being expatriated back to America.
Sir Malcolm Murray, on the other hand, went to Africa to return the body of Sembene, who got killed by Ethan when they were locked in the witch’s palace and Ethan transformed into a werewolf.
Victor Frankenstein, on the other hand, turned to drugs, after professing his love and was spurned by Lily in front of Dorian.
John Clare, played by Rory Kinnear, on the other hand, decided to head off elsewhere and was last seen heading to icy waters onboard a fishing boat. Evidently, he discovered that he was not the Frankenstein monster that he was being hyped to be as that title appears to belong to Lily.
Working together again
It is likely that situations in the upcoming Season 3 would warrant that the protagonists collaborate again to battle the show’s big bad so viewers would expect all of them to reunite once again. But whether that would happen at the onset of the season or towards the latter part remains to be seen.
What is clear thus far is that Vanessa Ives will be into a difficult situation once again similar to her condition during the first two seasons and would certainly require the help of her partners.
Meanwhile, Patti LuPone is going to be back on Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful.” She was featured in episode 3 of Season 2 as the cut-wife Joan Clayton.
Cut-wife is a term used during the Victorian era to describe a hedge witch, who decided to sever her ties to her coven and supposed marriage to the fallen angel Lucifer. But when she appeared in that episode of Season 2, Patti was more than just a cut-wife, she and her remote house became the refuge of Vanessa when she was out trying to find herself and who she was.
It was also in the same remote house in the glades that Vanessa and Ethan decided to retreat to protect Sir Malcolm whose house was being penetrated by dark forces at play.
It was through the cut-wife that she rediscovered her faith who told her that it was to be her greatest weapon in defending herself against the attempts of the fallen angel Lucifer, and his minions, to get her soul.
