‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 2 Exciting Windup in the Finale Leaves Fans Asking for More

Season 2 of the horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” had an exciting windup in its finale that left the fans astounded and asking for more. Because of the show’s superb finale, the series has been rated 8.3 out of 10 by most of the top review sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. The general consensus of the fans indicated that the show’s second season has been more intense in maximizing its characters.

The unique story-telling of the horror drama series began with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) being bombarded by occult messages that came from Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory). Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), on the other hand, was on his mission to bring Brona Croft (Billie Piper) back to life in the second season.

The secrets of the Verbis Diablo were also revealed during the season. Because of the massacre he orchestrated, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) had to leave Mariner’s Inn and go to London. At the same time, Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russel Beale) was able to contribute in unraveling the secrets of the Verbis Diablo.

Vanessa also grew her power during Season 2. In one of the flashbacks featured on the show, Vanessa met the Cut-Wife (Patti LuPone) who is supposed to be a master of the dark arts. Cut-Wife then honed Vanessa to become a wicked witch, but she had warned her of the dangers of possessing such power. Vanessa, driven by revenge and desire, dismissed the warning and accepted her fate with evil. Cut-Wife said that if she wanted to possess the power, she would have to be ready for the evil forces that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Though the second season ended with a bang, it did not start that great. The show tried to relive the elements of the first season as the creators strived to maintain the original feel of the show. Vanessa’s imminent transition from Season 1 to Season 2 was not felt, but Eva Green’s performance still proved that she is a force to be reckoned with in modern TV.

There is also the factor of the Nightcomers as one of the new plot twists. However, they look the same as the vampires from Season 1, so the fans of the show thought they were the same. Similarly, the show added Evelyn Poole’s dark master which closely resembles the shadow man who was called master in Season 1. Eventually, the show would explain that these “masters” were halves of a fallen angel so they look the same often.

Nonetheless, Vanessa’s flashback with the Cut-Wife has been one of the defining moments of the show. The story of the series moved to clear direction after that episode. It also helped because the episode helped explain the tale of the Nightcomers.

The season got even fiercer on the “Above the Vaulted Skies” and “Glorious Horrors” episodes. During those episodes, Sir Malcolm demonstrated his bewitching powers and Dorian’s crew have become more aggressive.

The ending also satisfied the fans. It came to the point where the good had to face the bad. In the finale, the team had defeated the witches. Sembene also died during the battle. The creature in the basement was also reprimanded and it was shipped back to the Arctic Circle. Then, Ethan was able to face his destiny and turned himself over to the authorities. He was later deported back to America.
