Paramount Pictures to Expand Cinematic Universe of ‘Transformers’ Franchise

While nearly everybody was speculating on the fifth installment of the “Transformers” franchise, Paramount Pictures is actually looking at the bigger picture than anyone else.

Apparently, it is not just looking at the next sequel of “Transformers” which reports have placed it to be released in 2017, but is actually eyeing to expand the cinematic universe of the very successful robot film franchise.

Consistent with what DC and Marvel are doing over the past couple of years, Paramount Pictures wants to capitalize on the success and continued popularity of the film franchise by producing more sequels and possibly spinoff movies too.

The studio has in fact taken on Oscar winning director-producer Akiva Goldsman to work with “Transformers” franchise director Michael Bay to make things happen for Paramount Pictures.

It has already been reported that after directing all the past four “Transformers” film, Michael Bay will no longer be directing the next sequel since he said he wanted to move on already. In fact, there are already reports that Jonathan Liebesman, the director of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” will be taking over the director’s chair from Michael Bay.

However, there have been reports of late that Michael Bay is confirmed to return for “Transformers 5.”

Now it is becoming clear that Michael Bay will return to the “Transformers” franchise as consultant to Paramount Pictures for possible sequels and spinoffs while Jonathan Liebesman will direct the next sequel.

A creative team coup

Almost everybody is familiar with the phrase ‘casting coup’ especially when big name actors that are nearly impossible to be put together in one film, finally show up in one movie.

But Paramount Pictures instead came up with a creative team coup by putting together Goldsman, Michael Bay and also thrown into the mix executive producer Steven Spielberg, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

This four-man team will organize and oversee a so-called writer’s room where they intend to hatch and bring about new and bright ideas for potential multi-part sequels to “Transformers” as well as several other spinoff films.

Goldsman is best known for writing the script for “A Beautiful Mind,” which won the Best Adapted Screenplay in the 2001 Academy Awards. But he will not be writing scripts or screenplays for the “Transformers” franchise. Instead, he would take on a supervisory and oversight role where he will secure good writers for the franchise who shall be the ones who would write the possible sequels and spinoffs.

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding “Transformers 5” movie particularly on who would be its main cast of characters and also what would be its plotline this time around. But the only one who has been confirmed to be back is Mark Wahlberg, who was also part of the last film “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”
