It’s arguable if “Battleborn” would have been successful as a free-to-play title though, as the game still had plenty of other issues that separated it from “Overwatch” and allowed Blizzard to end up successful with their own shooter.
Right now, those who want to play a “hero shooter” can basically choose between “Overwatch” and “Paladins”, or “Team Fortress 2” if they want a slightly different take on that type of gameplay.
And while some are referring to “Paladins” as “the poor man’s Overwatch”, the game has already managed to make a pretty big name for itself, with many players and critics talking about it all over the Internet. No matter if one agrees with the way Hi-Rez have handled its development, they were definitely successful at getting the exposure they wanted.
What’s on the agenda for “Paladins” now anyway? If the game keeps getting new heroes and maps, that’s pretty much all it would need to stay relevant and keep drawing in new players.
The studio should probably think about some customization options too, possibly adding modding capabilities to allow players to share their own additions. We’ve already seen this working great in “Team Fortress 2”, and it even allowed some content creators to earn a few extra bucks thanks to their work, so it’s definitely a good opportunity for this game.
Hero shooters are the hot thing on the market right now, and there hasn’t been a better time to jump into the genre either, so anyone who’s been interested has no excuses at this point.
