While “Outlander” is still in a relatively early phase in its lifecycle, it looks like the show’s producers are already thinking of ways to spice things up, and are considering some rather drastic changes in the overall premise, according to recent reports.
The news comes from actors Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, who revealed that the new season is going to feature some “very strong and different” plot lines. It hasn’t yet been confirmed what exactly the new stories will revolve around, but that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to guess. In fact, the announcement by the showrunners has resulted in some serious discussions within the show’s community recently, and it’s interesting to take a peek at those and see what fans have to say.
One of the specific details that have been revealed about the new season so far is that it’s going to feature a new setting, at least for some part of it. More specifically, the crew has taken their filming to South Africa. This should provide a nice change of scenery compared to season 2 (and the first one as well), and it’s possible that other locations are planned as well.
People involved with the show seem quite excited about what’s coming up as well, and we’ve seen some positive comments from Sam Heughan in particular. The actor is apparently even proud of his work on season 3, and he sounded quite delighted to be involved in the show in its current state.
Heughan and Balfe are also reportedly both pleased to get a chance to work in exotic conditions, and so far filming the new season has been a great experience for the show’s couple. However, fans who enjoy their part of the story will probably be disappointed to find out that some rather drastic changes are coming their way as well, and the timeline might skip a few beats by the time season 3 starts.
If the show follows the original storyline from the books as closely as possible, then we’re going to see Frank’s character getting less screen time in season 3. However, it’s possible that the writers are going to change things up a bit in order to keep Sam Heughan’s character in the spotlight.
It would make sense for them to go in that direction, considering how many fans are paying close attention to the relationship between Claire and Frank, and how many would be subsequently disappointed by any negative developments between them.
It looks like the best move for the producers right now would be to keep exploring both characters in detail, even if that means deviating from the original storyline a bit. After all, TV shows that follow an original book rarely end up following the classic story down to the last letter, and it’s not rare that producers are forced to take some creative risks in order to keep things interesting for their format.
With that in mind, fans should probably not worry that much about what’s coming up for Claire and Frank, despite the rumors surrounding their characters.
Other than that, reports about season 3 have been coming in slowly and there aren’t that many interesting new revelations lately. It does look like everything is coming along nicely behind the scenes, judging by what various people involved with the show have been saying, so fans have every reason to be optimistic for season 3.
