During the Season 1 finale of “Outlander,” Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser and Caitriona Balfe’s Claire Randall were transported to Paris. This alone gave fans an idea that Season 2 is about to have the French treatment.
Executive producer Ronald Moore quips that the second season of “Outlander” will be very different with the first one.
According to the showrunner, the setting will be visually colorful as Paris was very populous during that era.
According to Cinema Blend, the period drama will see the time-travelling pair head to Paris to indulge on the best that society has to offer, all while attempting to put a stop to the Jacobite Revolution from starting.
The duo will do this by subverting the funds that King Louis XV of France is providing to the pretender Charles Stuart. Moore announced in July last year that Lion Lingelser was cast to play King Louis.
Speaking during the TCA winter press tour, lead actor Sam Heughan shared details about his character in the upcoming season.
The 35-year-old actor says that the second season will be about discovering the side of Jamie that no one knew was there.
The Scottish actor adds that Jamie will be playing someone else who’s learning to be quite deceptive and appears to be very good at it.
This is expected as the couple’s move to Paris will entail Jamie to change a lot especially as he starts to be part of politics and to a certain extent, and be a spy too.
Speaking to Elle, both Heughan and Balfe admitted that the upcoming season will be a whole lot different than the first one.
Heughan says that fans can expect a different look and feel towards the show’s second season.
Sam adds that the costumes look fantastic and is a sight to see every episode. He jokingly says that there are fewer swords and shields this time and more of back-stabbings and politics.
Balfe, on the other hand, describes the season as a transition for Claire. The 36-year-old actress reveals that in Season 2, her character will be multi-faceted and that along with being a mom, she will be aiding Jamie work through the traumatic experience he suffered in the previous season.
The Irish actress adds that her relationship with Jamie will be put to the test and it will be difficult for her. Luckily, she knows that the two will manage to make it through without severing their relationship.
She also adds that the pair will have the same passion as they had in Season 1, saying that it will always be part of their relationship.
Cinema Blend notes that fans of Diana Gabaldon’s novel, to which the historical drama is based, already have a clear idea about what is coming for Jamie and Claire during their Parisian journey. After all, the Starz series has stuck to the outline of the novel.
Starz has already released a trailer for the second season, and while the 60s timeline for the upcoming season is different from that of the books, the main plot from the original source pretty much remains intact.
The season will also welcome Andrew Gower as Bonnie Prince Charlie. Charlie is currently living in Paris to which Jamie will be acting as some sort of a double agent, protecting Charlie but also sabotaging him for good reasons.
Reports say that Jamie will sabotage him because if Charlie ends up getting money to start a revolt in Scotland, it will lead to the Jacobite risings and the Battle of Culloden, where many lives will be lost.
However, Heughan’s comments regarding his character’s sabotage will seem to fail and that the course of history will be set in motion.
Robert Cavanah will also join the show as Jamie’s cousin Jared along with Margaux Chatelier as Annalise de Marilac, Jamie’s ex-lover.
