The second season of the sensual and romantic time-travel drama TV series “Outlander” will premiere on the Starz network in less than a week’s time and every fan and viewer of the show can hardly contain their excitement.
“Outlander” Season 2 will return to the small screen on April 9 and it promises to focus on the opulent, exciting, and complicated love affair of Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, and Claire Fraser, played by Caitriona Balfe.
In a recent interview during the special premiere screening of “Outlander” in New York City, Sam Heughan said that the second season is more about the bigger picture.
He said that the show will be exploring new and exciting themes in Season 2, even comically comparing it to the differences between pants and trousers, cites Access Hollywood.
The current second season shall feature only 13 episodes, which is three episodes less compared to the 16 during Season 1.
However, actress Caitriona Balfe says that Season 2 of “Outlander” will happen at its own dazzling pace, alluding that the TV series, which will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s second book titled “Dragonfly in Amber,” did not push itself to go for 16 episodes when the story and plotlines can all be told in 13 episodes, reports Deadline.
Not a direct adaptation
The series has Ronald D. Moore as executive producer, who said recently that while Season 2 of “Outlander” is based on the second book of Gabaldon, it is not going to be a direct adaptation of the best-selling book released in 1992.
But the main plot of Season 2 shall be based on the book which would see Jamie and Claire working to change history by preventing the Jacobite rising and stopping the Battle of Culloden from happening even as they work on healing the scars of their marriage coming from the torturous events during Season 1.
The second season of “Outlander” shall pick up where Season 1 left off with Jamie and Claire already headed to Paris in a new world dubbed as more dangerous than fighting the English in Scotland, an island which they both share.
Season 2 of the TV series shall feature royal courts as well as sexual and political intrigues which would be in stark contrast to Season 1 which was full of passion and mostly set in the highlands.
It is also expected that actors Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe will display greater depth and intricacy in Season 2 after they have fully established their characters in Season 1.
Classy and gorgeous costumes
Except for the first few episodes of Season 1 of the British historical drama series “Outlander” on Starz, the rest of the 16 episodes focused mostly on the Scottish highlands when Claire Randall, played by Catriona Balfe, was transposed back in time 200 years before her time after she touched the standing stones in a Scotland meadow.
Most of the costumes back in Season 1 where rural in nature and things will be amped up in Season 2 as Jamie and Claire finally reach Paris where they will blend in with the city’s social circles.
Apparently, they needed to blend into the French capital’s social circles because they are on a mission to stop the Jacobite rising.
Based on the history books, the Jacobite rising gave way to the Battle of Culloden, which practically wiped out the entire Scottish clans in Scotland. Since Claire already knows the future, she and Jamie will attempt to stop the Jacobite rising from happening by liaising with Bonnie Prince Charles of France.
Season 2 of “Outlander” shall also have a major turnaround from Season 1 costume-design wise.
