“Outlander” had a pretty successful first season, and the show managed to establish a very solid fan base, as people are now waiting for season 2 to roll around. Season 1 ended with quite the cliffhanger, and it was seen as a very controversial scene by many, including fans and critics alike. And now, all those people are waiting to see how the show is going to continue, as it looks like season 2 is going to come with quite the interesting opening episode.
We’ve been getting some details about the upcoming second season, including some talks about the futures of certain characters. Jamie and Claire are likely going to be relocated to Paris, and this might play out in an interesting way after the weird reunion the two of them had with the constant acting out by Jamie.
The experience that Jamie had to go through was quite brutal and not something that most TV shows would readily show, and it also shocked many viewers significantly, generating a lot of discussion about the episode on the Internet. It’s not clear if the producers were hoping to stir up so much controversy or if they just wanted to show their message and this was a side effect of it, but in the end the final result was there.
People found the rape scene very disturbing and the way it was depicted added even more to those responses, as both Jamie and Claire acted very well, with a solid performance from both characters that simply topped off the whole scene in an amazing way. Jamie threatened to kill himself, to which Claire responded that she would do the same, and in the end both of them ended up moving to Paris. There, another surprise comes up as it turns out that Claire is carrying Jamie’s child, which should add even more confusion to season 2 once it arrives to the screen.
Season 2 will likely be underlined by the traumatic experience that Jamie had to go through, and it will be referenced multiple times throughout the new episodes, according to reports. We don’t know if the writers will directly address the rape or if they will just imply that Jamie is suffering from it occasionally, but reports about the new season did specifically claim that the couple is going to have a hard time adjusting to their new life in Paris, and that would be part of the reason for their difficulty.
On the other hand, Claire’s pregnancy will be complicated as well and the couple will have to find a way to deal with that at the same time. This will prove more difficult than we’re expecting, according to people involved with the show, and it might be a central part to the plot of the new season. We don’t know what kinds of complications there will be, but this show has already clearly proven that it can push its limits quite far, so we can expect a lot.
Meanwhile, the two characters will also find themselves entangled in a political conspiracy, with Jamie in particular trying to make sense of the relations between certain politicians around him. In the end, they might find themselves stopping a coup from happening, and this could play even further into the plot about the pregnancy and Jamie’s past issues from the end of season 1. All in all, it looks like the drama will be ramped up significantly in season 2.

I was very upset by the Jamie rape scene. The degree of detail was unnecessary. But I will watch Season 2 hoping that Ron Moore will rein in his tendency to glorify violence.
