A heart-wrenching scene
Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia Burset in “Orange is the New Black,” has revealed in a recent interview that there was a scene in Season 3 that really brought her to tears.
Sophia has had a major battle with Gloria, played by Selenis Leyva, during the past season, as a result of their conflict with their respective sons, details Enstarz.
It ended with Sophia getting assaulted in the latter episodes and eventually going to the SHU. Cox said that when he read the script that her character is going to be assaulted in her own salon, it brought her to tears.
She said that she is a lover not a fighter in real life, detailing that she was also bullied a lot when she was a kid. Rather than fight them, she would rather run away from bullies. So when the scene was presented to her by Director Uta Briesewitz, she thought that it was not really who she was so she once again ran.
Her hesitation toward the scene also had something to do with the sensitive subject matter of violence against trans people.
Cox said that she was concerned about trans people watching the TV series and it might trigger something. Nonetheless, she thought that it would be a very important story to tell and tell truthfully so they proceeded with it.
