Rumors were rife that “Orange is the New Black” will be canceled after its fifth season. The rumor stemmed from a report from TMZ Uncut and has escalated since, worrying many fans of the hit Netflix TV series.
The website notes that Netflix had already dropped the show after 78 of its 2,000 employees did not show up for work after the “Orange is the New Black” watch party.
Fortunately, the Emmy-nominated show’s executive producer Jenji Kohan has cleared up the rumor. The showrunner said that there is no truth to the cancellation rumor nor the employees not showing up.
In fact, Kohan and the “OINTB” production are celebrating because the show has been renewed for the three more seasons. He also confirmed that he will serve as the executive producer for the next three seasons of the show.
Kohan also thanked Netflix and Lionsgate for their support and says that they are part of the reasons why the show is successful. He says that the renewal was because of the ratings and the rave reviews that “Orange is the New Black” have been getting.
The showrunner adds that production for Season 5 is in full swing and thanked all the fans for making the 3-year renewal possible. He also teases them that they still have a lot in store for them to catch their interest until Season 7.
Meanwhile, the upcoming season is heavily rumored to have more Litchfield Penitentiary inmates die. After the shocking death of Poussey Washington last season, speculations say that Piper’s time may be up as well.
According to reports, more deaths are expected to happen in the new season as a way of supporting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.
Parent Herald reports that the new season will begin with the aftermath of Poussey’s death with the inmates reflecting on the loss of their friend.
Many were shocked when the character was accidentally suffocated by Baxter Bailey last season after a riot broke out in prison.
Fans reacted negatively to the decision of the producers with the character’s death. Even Samira Wiley, the actress who portrays Poussey, admitted that she found it hard to accept her character’s death.
However, writers claimed that Poussey’s death will be the driving force to lead the show’s next season into a new direction.
Spoilers suggest that Season 5 will be welcomed with more riots relating to Poussey’s death. It was, after all, a riot where Poussey’s life ended.
Speaking to Pop Sugar, Taylor Schilling who plays Piper, teases fans that she doesn’t know what will happen to her character in the upcoming season.
Schilling says that her character will be pulling away from the idea of what she thought she was in the past seasons.
She said that it’s going to be a tough season for Piper as she will be focused on surviving thus neglecting herself in the process.
This will be apparent in Piper’s appearance as her hair will be pulled back next season — a clear indication that the character doesn’t care how she looks anymore.
Game & Guide reports that the new installment to the Netflix hit will be a turning point for Piper.
Previews of the upcoming season show Piper getting her hand hammered. Taylor seems to deny that was how the scene will go and hints that other things will happen.
However, when asked if Piper will make it out alive in Season 5, the actress gave silence as an answer.
While the show’s first few season centered on Piper, many characters have taken the spotlight since then thus it is likely the Piper will meet her demise in the upcoming season.
In fact, Piper has even managed to be one of the most hated characters in the show because she has grown to be more dominant throughout the series.
Reports say that Piper will become successful with her underwear business in Season 5, but because of the success, she will become manipulative.
