One Direction, A Big Hit Among Singaporean Fans; Packs National Stadium

Singaporean fans, mostly teenage girls and ladies, are swooning over One Direction as the British boy band takes centerstage in their first Singapore concert at the massive National Stadium located in Kallang.

The Singapore leg is part of One Direction’s concert tour “On The Road Again” to promote their fourth studio album aptly titled “Four” released in November last year, reports The Straits Times.

The National Stadium was on capacity crowd as more than 30,000 tickets were sold for the “One Direction” concert, making it the biggest Western pop act in Singapore in recent times.

In fact, more than half a day before One Direction’s concert slated on the night of March 11, as much as 8,000 fans were already lining up on the gates of the National Stadium in preparation for their music idol’s concert.

Getting the headstart

Some of these fans were already at the venue during the wee hours of March 11 just to get a headstart with the rest. The security guard of the venue confirmed that some 8,000 fans were already queuing at the gates of the venue when the light of day broke out on the day of One Direction’s concert, as some actually went on camp out near the gates of the National Stadium.

However, most of them were disappointed upon learning that the National Stadium would only officially open the venue gates for queuing at 11 in the morning of March 11. Still, that did not deter them from staying put lest somebody else gets their spots.

Early in the day, members of One Direction featuring Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayne Malik and Louis Tomlinson were already at the venue doing their sound checks on their musical instruments that they are going to use for the concert.

That was more than enough for the fans outside of the venue to know that their idols are already inside preparing for the concert while they agonizingly but patiently wait outside.

Massive fan support

As the group is very popular in Singapore, they are expected also to draw massive fan support during their concert.

Word has it that when 1D starts singing their 2012 hit song “Little Things” in the National Stadium, they will be seeing a sea of red and white lights shining from the audience.

Apparently, fans all over the world hold up their respective mobile phones and light up the concert venue every time One Direction sings “Little Things.” But in the case of Singaporeans, they will make a variation of it and will instead go for red and white lights, to represent the colors of the Singapore flag and their country.

On the evening of March 8, some 800 Singapore fans of One Direction gathered at the Supertree Grove in Gardens by the Bay to perform a mass dance as part of the 1D Carnival organized by Sony Music Entertainment Singapore. The video of their performance will be posted on the One Direction website on March 14.
