The original “Nidhogg” got some pretty good responses across the board, and it was clear that the developers of the game had done many things right. At the same time, players felt like they were left asking for more – in the good way, not to imply that the game was lacking – and it looks like the developers have been listening.
The announcement of “Nidhogg 2” immediately got a lot of attention all over the Internet, and players rushed to discuss everything they had seen in the preview. The developers are now going for a new, improved visual style, and they’re apparently planning to spend a bit more time polishing the game’s contents now.
Other than that, players are of course going to get plenty of new levels – set in new locations too – and other types of content that should spice up the already highly addictive gameplay of the original. The first “Nidhogg” was a bit simplistic in its gameplay style, even though it still offered plenty of depth, so we’re excited to see what the developers have been doing for the sequel.
One of the things we’ve heard so far is that players will get many more opportunities to dispatch their opponents now, and we’ve heard reports that the game might feature new types of weapons, like bows and other medieval “tools”.
In addition, it’s also rumored that the game will feature a much better variety of options for players to get rid of their opponent. The first game was a bit of an experiment in this regard, and while it offered a good variety of tools, some felt a bit unbalanced compared to others.
The combination of a deeper gameplay and more polished graphics should be all this game needs in order to climb to the top of all charts once it comes out, and we have high hopes for it. The only thing that’s left for the developers to announce is the availability of the game on different platforms, as they have been a bit unclear on that so far.
Many players are assuming that they are just going to follow what they did with the original “Nidhogg” though, which means that we should see it released on the PC, PlayStation 4, and possibly the PS Vita. Other platforms are probably out of the question unless the developers mention something themselves.
While we don’t see a reason for them to move to other systems right now, the popularity of the game does offer a good opportunity to expand it to new communities. It’s up to backstage politics for this to happen in the end though, so those hoping to see the game on e.g. the Xbox One shouldn’t get their hopes up too much.
Hopefully this game isn’t going to become a victim of its own popularity, as many players seem to be expecting something quite exciting and well-developed from it. While we don’t doubt that the game is going to get an adequate amount of polish, it seems like some players’ expectations might be a bit too high for their own good.
This is a common issue in the gaming industry, and it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a game fail because the developers have raised the bar too high even for themselves. But of course, there is not much reason to believe that right now, especially since we haven’t heard of any issues related to the development so far.
