It’s no secret that there is some negativity between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, and the two of them haven’t been particularly positive towards each other lately. Things have now reached a new point at the recent VMAs where Nicki Minaj took a jab at Cyrus, closing off her speech with a little something aimed directly at Cyrus. And of course, this didn’t get ignored by Cyrus, and fans on both sides, as the Internet blew up with discussions about the incident. In fact, this seems to be overshadowing most other discussions about the VMAs in general.
However, Cyrus didn’t immediately respond to the line and kept her composure during the night, congratulating Minaj and going on with her presentation. Many of Minaj’s fans seem convinced that the jab was entirely deserved and warranted, as Cyrus was the one to make some public comments about Minaj in a recent interview, related to Minaj’s talks about how “Anaconda” didn’t make it to the Video of the Year award.
When that was revealed about her song, Minaj stated that the problem was with the way the media and the industry look at black women, claiming that there is a huge problem with the representation of that segment of society within the music industry. And as can be expected, these comments drew a lot of attention to her and there were some pretty heated discussions about what Minaj said, culminating in Miley Cyrus talking about the incident herself.
And while the tension between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus seems to be cooling down for the time being – yet again – there have been some interesting comments circulating around as a result of the brief exchange. According to some critics, there really is a problem with the way certain races are represented in the VMAs, pointing out some interesting statistics about who has won different types of awards and what kinds of artists usually get nominated in the first place.
In the end though, Cyrus did respond in a classless way when she was talking about this statement by Minaj, and that seems to be the source of most negativity towards her right now. Many people seem to agree that Cyrus is dipping her fingers in waters she has no place touching, and she’s out of her territory if she wants to discuss racial issues in the music industry.
There haven’t been any follow-ups from either side so far, but we expect that this won’t be the last we’ll hear about the incident, and about the discussions started by Minaj. Now that she’s made her statement, we expect that there will be a lot of talk in the industry about how the VMAs work and the preferences they have towards certain artists.
Whether or not this will result in any actual change though, we don’t know – the music industry is highly volatile and things keep happening all the time, sometimes not in the way fans were hoping. We expect that some organizers might come out with public statements, but we’re not sure if there will be any actual changes.
Until then, responses to the VMAs themselves have been somewhat positive, with many people expressing satisfaction from the way the event went down and the different announcements that were made and awards that were given out. It was an overall successful run, although the controversy with Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus seems to be dominating all discussions about the evening so far, for good or bad.
