As can be expected before such a major release, Google have been doing whatever they can to boost the popularity of their Nexus line and bring it into the spotlight. The company is preparing for the launch of a new Nexus device – the 2015 edition of the phone – and because of that, they’ve recently decided to offer the 2014 Nexus 6 at a reduced price. Currently, interested buyers can get the 32 GB version for just $299, which is a pretty nice discount over the regular price of the smartphone.
It’s still a somewhat relevant device on the current market as well, as its specifications aren’t significantly below the market average, but at the same time the anticipation for the new model is probably enough reason for most people to hold off on the purchase. Those looking to replace their main device will probably want to wait and see what Google will have to offer with this year’s release, while on the other hand the 2014 phone could make a nice gift for family members and friends who don’t need something cutting edge.
Currently, Google are expected to make their major announcement at an upcoming event on September 29, where we’re likely going to see other interesting revelations made as well. Some fans have been excited to see the new version of Android discussed in detail at the event, and we’re likely going to see a bit more information about upcoming releases on the Android market as a whole, not just on Google’s side.
There are various rumors about the hardware specifications of the upcoming phone, and while no official details are known yet, we’re probably going to get something with a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3 GB of RAM and various other goodies that should make it a more than capable phone for a 2015 device. It’s true that applications have been getting more and more demanding – especially on Android – but phones have been evolving quite fast as well, and today users are carrying a staggering amount of hardware in their pockets everywhere they go.
Some are also expecting Google to lower the base price of the line with this release, and the Nexus 6P might come as a cheaper offer meant to attract even more people to the Nexus brand. We don’t know if that’s true or not, but Google could definitely use a boost in popularity when it comes to their Nexus devices.
They’ve certainly suffered a bit from the way they handled some of their earlier releases, such as the Nexus 7, and that makes it particularly important for them to handle the release of the Nexus 6P and subsequent devices with enough care and attention. It’s even more important considering that the holiday season is approaching and now is the best time to make a good impression on the market and draw in some new customers from all sides.
The main question that people are asking when it comes to the Nexus 6P – and the 2014 Nexus 6 – is about the long-term support of Android that they would get along with those devices. Other devices by Google, like the 2012 Nexus 7, were handled quite poorly in this regard, as they are not even usable with Android 5.0 which has left many users significantly behind the common trend, and have resulted in a lot of disappointment within the community.
