“NCIS” is going to go through some rather harsh changes to its overall setup, as some of the show’s characters are about to be significantly transformed. There are various theories among the fan community about what might happen in the new season, especially after the way the last one ended, but the developments that are about to occur might not be entirely positive. In fact, fans will definitely have to prepare for some rather shocking moments and get ready to accept the fact that some of their favorite characters won’t be the same.
The main question right now is what might happen to Gibbs. He got shot at the end of season 12, and this left the show with a huge cliffhanger that has been the subject of a lot of discussion by fans, and while it’s safe to assume that he will survive, that might not happen without some dramatic transformations in his personality.
Getting shot like that will surely change anyone, and Gibbs is only human after all, which is why he will end up suffering some severe mental issues regarding his relationship with his coworkers, especially some specific ones like Tony DiNozzo. DiNozzo will have to take the place of Gibbs – rather involuntarily too – and this will reflect very negatively on Gibbs himself who will see this as an attempt to push him out of the picture for good.
And while fans have been hopeful that the relationship between the two characters will eventually be preserved, we don’t know if that’s actually the case. It might turn out that they’re in for a much harsher falling out than we’re expecting, and end up turning into enemies. That would be a sad development indeed, but it’s not something that we would put past the show’s creators.
After all, “NCIS” has been running for twelve seasons already, with a thirteenth one coming up, and the show needs to make some drastic changes in order to stay relevant and keep its fans on their toes. And as we know from previous experiments on television, sometimes those changes have to be really prominent and also somewhat negative in order to have the full desired effect.
From what we’re hearing from the various previews for the show, it sounds like the change that Gibbs will go through will end up reflecting on his entire team and this is something that everyone will have to deal with, not just Gibbs and DiNozzo. It’s likely going to be a major problem for most of the season, and there are already rumors that this transformation is going to interfere with the work of pretty much everyone.
Could it mean that the writers are trying to phase out the character slowly? This is one of the most prominent theories in the fan community – that they didn’t want to outright kill him at the end of season 12, but rather let him go gracefully and probably even make fans glad that he’s out of the picture after some time
However, that would be a pretty bad way to take the character out of the show if that’s really the final plan of the producers, so hopefully that’s not the case. There is always the other possibility – that Gibbs will end up recovering and will fix his relationship with all the other characters, even though the likelihood of that is starting to seem really low at this point.
