The success of the first season of “Narcos” came as a surprise to many, and rumors indicated that even the showrunners themselves ended up a bit overwhelmed by the response they got. After that, it was quite clear that the show is here to stay and that we’re going to see more episodes from it. But some people have been pointing out a worrying trend for its future – if “Narcos” is still going to focus on the life of Pablo Escobar, the show couldn’t realistically go on for much longer, given the fact that the notorious drug lord lost his life not long after the events from the season 1 finale.
According to Eric Newman, the production team is well aware of the tricky situation and they have already planned ahead correspondingly. The producers of the show intentionally told so much in just one season, as they apparently already had the idea to finish Escobar’s story in season 2.
He did also admit that most people behind the scenes felt somewhat conflicted about this, as they would apparently gladly keep Escobar on the show if there was a sensible way to do that. Currently though, they are focusing on continuing the story after the events that will transpire in season 2.
From what we can tell, fans predicting that “Narcos” is going to move in a new direction were apparently on the right track, as there are already talks of continuing the show after the death of Escobar. It sounds like the next episodes are simply going to focus on another prominent drug lord, or even possibly branch things out into multiple stories revolving around different famous barons.
Anything is possible in this regard, and the producers certainly have no shortage of history to base more episodes of the show on. The plot could actually get quite a lot more interesting if they decided to take a look at the histories of other drug dealers as well, although there is probably no chance that they will move the setting to a different location for now. The show is called “Narcos”, after all, and that sets a certain tone for its premise.
The title of the series has actually been the main reason for some fans to believe that it will eventually branch off from the story of Pablo Escobar and take a deeper look at other people who were in his “trade”. If they also build some links to Escobar himself and show how he was related to the different other drug lords who controlled the market at the time, this could actually take a very interesting look into the past and the show might explore topics that many people are still unfamiliar with, shedding some light on those events. Who knows, we may even end up learning things that were never mainstream knowledge about drug lords, and the somewhat realistic premise of “Narcos” has a lot of potential.
We have no idea about the producers’ plans at the moment, and judging by the way things have reportedly been going behind the scenes, there might not be much clarity on that side either. With rumors about major changes in the line-up of showrunners, we are not sure where things will end up and who will head the production of the second season. With the way things have been moving, we might see the show with a completely new face once season 2 rolls around.
