It is not just Columbian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, who shall meet his end in the upcoming second season of the American crime drama TV series “Narcos” when it premieres on Netflix on September 2, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Agent Javier Pena shall reportedly kick the bucket too.
Pena is played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who is best known in the TV circles for portraying Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne in the HBO hit series “Game of Thrones.”
Reports have it that the stint of Pascal as Javier Pena would also be short-lived as he is likely to meet his demise in Season 2 of “Narcos,” reports the Christian Daily.
The speculations about Javier Pena’s death in the series stemmed from the trailer released by Netflix last month for “Narcos” Season 2. Towards the end of the video clip, Pena is held at gunpoint by Pablo Escobar.
Fans of “Game of Thrones” would recall that Pedro Pascal’s character in the fantasy TV series in HBO got his head squashed to a pulp by The Mountain during a trial by combat where the Prince Oberyn represented Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage.
Rumors are rife that Pascal’s Javier Pena character may be in for another gory death in the second season of “Narcos.”
Sticking to history or not?
It would be interesting if Netflix would stick to history in documenting the death of the greatest drug lord of Columbia.
Based on history, Escobar was killed by Colonel Hugo Martinez and his men after a shootout with the Search Bloc on December 2, 1993.
Martinez in the TV series is being portrayed by Maurice Compte’s character Horacio Carrillo, a soldier who leads his own Search Bloc against the drug kingpin in the TV series.
While the death of Pablo Escobar in the upcoming Season 2 of “Narcos” is imminent, reports are also going around that the drug lord will not go down without a fight, which is what exactly he did when he got cornered by authorities back then.
An invasion not a manhunt
In the trailer for “Narcos” Season 2, a massive manhunt was organized after Pablo Escobar broke out from prison since he is a high-profile criminal and his escape surely did not go unnoticed, notes the Christian Today.
Columbian authorities deployed 4,000 soldiers to put Escobar back in jail and the search actually involved a bunch of helicopters and he really appeared to have nowhere to go.
In fact, US DEA Agent Steve Murphy, played by Boyd Holbrook in the TV series, called it an invasion and not just a manhunt. He said that Pablo Escobar was never more dangerous than when the authorities almost have him.
Murphy was also quoted as saying in the trailer that Escobar’s escape is the biggest law enforcement blunder of all time so the Columbian authorities wanted to make sure that they got payback.
Incidentally, Netflix may be taking the legal threat of the brother of Pablo Escobar seriously as the latest promo pictures for Season 2 of “Narcos” no longer focuses heavily on the character.
Pablo’s brother Roberto is reportedly claiming $1 billion from Netflix for using the rights of the drug kingpin on “Narcos.” Subsequently, rumors started going around that the producers and the streaming service will speed up the demise of Escobar in the TV series all the more.
Roberto Escobar publicly came out recently claiming that he has the successor-in-interest rights to the Escobar family and demanded a staggering $1 billion from Netflix for using the content rights without their permission.
In a letter to Netflix, Roberto stated that the rights of the Escobar family and Pablo Escobar’s life are registered under the company called Escobar, Inc.
Escobar also insisted on reviewing the second season of “Narcos” as he believes that there were glaring mistakes, lies, and discrepancies from the real story of his brother Pablo.
Netflix has yet to officially comment on the claims of Roberto but it seems that the streaming service is taking the safer side by skirting altogether the issue and giving too much emphasis on Pablo Escobar in Season 2 of “Narcos.”
