Narcos Season 2 Could Be the Last for the Netflix Hit Series, Speculations Say!

It has been reported that Pablo Escobar, played by Wagner Moura, the focal point of the American crime drama TV series “Narcos” on Netflix, will die in the upcoming second season of the hit show.

Based on the Season 1 finale, Season 2 would have a very limited time to focus on Escobar’s escape from La Catedral in 1992 to his death in Medellin in 1993. Filming for “Narcos” is now ongoing in Bogota, Colombia.

That means that Season 2 can only focus on the 18 months from the time that Escobar escaped from La Catedral to his death in Medellin. Thus, it is likely that the death of Pablo Escobar would be featured in the upcoming season of “Narcos,” leaving Season 3 without the main character from where its storyline can revolve or in dire straits perhaps.

With the reports of Season 2 featuring the demise of the Pablo Escobar, some critics believe that it shall also be the last for “Narcos” since the TV series will run out of steam and would look forced if the producers decide to focus on some other drug kingpins.

But if it is up to the producers, they would certainly wish a longer run for “Narcos” since apart from very good ratings, the TV series is also a critically-acclaimed one.

A sealed fate

With Escobar’s fate pretty much sealed in “Narcos” Season 2 because that is what happened to him in real life, there are a lot of speculations that Netflix would focus on the life stories of the other heads of drug cartels that rose to power after Escobar’s death.

However, the same speculations also fuelled rumors that the second season of “Narcos” could actually be its last too.

It also did not help when acting executive producer Eric Newman recently stated that the future of the show is still in the shadows. He also confirmed that Escobar will indeed meet his end in the upcoming season, details the Parent Herald.

Set and filmed in Colombia, “Narcos” tells the true story of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. The show also focused on Escobar’s interactions with drug lords, DEA agents, and various opposition entities.

In the same interview, Newman also said that if they could only find a way to keep Escobar alive, they will keep Wagner on the show. But his character is about to die. He, however, said that there are any number of things that can happen after. He assured fans that they have not committed to one or the other just yet.

Newman added that there are a lot of other stories in the world that continue on beyond Pablo Escobar.

Problem with showrunners

Meanwhile, the production of “Narcos” Season 2 continues to be hounded by the problem of having no showrunner, fuelling speculations that the TV series might push back its previously-announced August 2016 premiere date on Netflix, notes the Christian Post.

“Narcos” was left without a showrunner recently after Adam Fierro stepped down from the series even before the Season 1 finale.

Fierro came into “Narcos” to replace Chris Brancato who resigned from his post even before the first episode of the TV series was aired on Netflix last year.

Brancato left the TV series to take on a bigger position as head of ABC Studio’s new drama “Of Kings and Prophets.”

However, it can be noted that Brancato was not the pioneer series creator of “Narcos” either. He joined the TV series when it was already halfway into production for Season 1 and was eventually given co-creator credits along with Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro.

  1. Well the good news… we know they are currently filming Narcos season 2. If we have to wait, then we wait.. but at least we know it will eventually be here. One of the most exciting and great shows. It will rank up there with Deadwood as one of those perfectly written and acted pieces of art!
