Motorola Moto G2: Is an Upgrade to the New G3 Worth the Price at the Moment?

Motorola’s Moto G has been a successful and popular line, and it’s not a big surprise that the company has been exploring their further options with the phones. After the Moto G2, they’ve released the G3 in July this year – now called the Moto G 2015 – and the phone has been getting similarly positive reviews. It’s also not an expensive device, which has made many people focus on it and wonder if they should be looking into replacing their G2 devices.

The phone is indeed quite good overall, and has great specifications for its price of $179, making it a very attractive offer, even for those who enjoy a little more performance in their Android devices. The phone also comes with a revised exterior, one that gives it a higher quality feel/look, and the Moto G3 definitely looks like a modern 2015 device.

The resolution hasn’t been changed from the G2, and it’s still a 1280×720 screen with the same pixel density. Some reviewers have noted an apparently better picture quality in the Moto G3 on the other hand, although it’s not yet clear if this is an actual change or just a placebo effect from the phone’s improved physical design. In the end though, if people see a better quality picture in that screen, that’s all that really matters.

The Moto G3 weighs 155 grams, which makes it a relatively lightweight device, and it’s offered in two versions, 8 GB and 16 GB, with an additional microSD slot. Buyers can also choose between a 1 GB and 2 GB version of the phone in terms of RAM, and the phone is quite customizable in general, offered under Motorola’s Moto Maker program which allows buyers to very finely tune their purchases and get a device that looks exactly like they want it to.

Which is great because it goes in line with the trend in Android, which is to give users as much customization as possible and help them make their devices entirely their own. Different manufacturers have been implementing this design philosophy in different ways, but Motorola have generally been praised for having one of the best offers on the market when it comes to getting a completely customized Android phone.

On the back of the phone, users will find a 13 megapixel camera, as well as a 5 megapixel one on the front. The rear camera takes quite good pictures, according to most critics, while the front one is perfect for selfies. A 5 megapixel front shooter is actually becoming quite common in the industry, even among lower-end devices, and it’s not surprising to see it on the Moto G3 as well.

Of course, it ships with Android 5 Lollipop pre-installed, something which should go without saying for a 2015 device at this point. Customers are expecting nothing less, and the new version of Android is slowly but steadily taking over its side of the market. While some users haven’t been able to update to it in time, the upgrade is now being pushed out to most devices running Android, and even those who started out on a lower version should have access to it soon enough.

The phone is overall quite the good configuration for its price, and it should be a satisfying purchase for those looking for a bit of a punch at a good cost. It’s not an Android powerhouse and there are definitely more powerful phones out there, but it’s a solid device for that amount of money.
