The situation around “Mortal Kombat X” has been a bit strange lately, as even though the game managed to get lots of positive responses with its initial release and was praised for pushing the franchise forward in multiple ways, NetherRealm have slowed down their progress on new content for it lately.
After releasing two “Kombat Packs”, players were eagerly anticipating the third one’s arrival to the market, but at this point it looks like this may not be happening anytime soon. Reports indicate that progress hasn’t simply been slow, as the studio is actually considering not releasing the new pack at all.
Or at least, that’s the plan for the time being, as they have been putting all of their development efforts in another area – “Injustice 2”. The game is still in heavy development and isn’t set to come out for at least another year, but it looks like it’s been taking up quite a lot of NetherRealm’s time, and has been causing scheduling problems for the studio.
It makes sense that the developers would want to focus on something they see as having more potential, but at the same time, turning their backs on their current players could be a disastrous move for their future.
It’s also worth remembering that this is “Mortal Kombat” we’re talking about, a franchise with a very important place in the gaming industry and a name that has become pretty much iconic for many gamers. NetherRealm would definitely not want to go down in gaming history as the studio that messed that up.
Meanwhile, at least things on the “Injustice 2” front have apparently been quite good. The game is coming along nicely, according to reports, and it’s also benefited from the studio’s previous work on “Mortal Kombat X” somewhat directly.
More specifically, the engine powering the latest fighter has also found its way to “Injustice 2”, and the technology is apparently a perfect fit for the new game. There were lots of positive comments about “Mortal Kombat X” regarding the quality of its graphics, so we’re curious to see how its engine could look with another set of assets thrown on.
In fact, some experts have pointed out that this technology should have seen more use in the industry at this point, as “Mortal Kombat X” was powered by quite the impressive engine. However, there are always multiple issues at play when it comes to using such tech in the industry, and it’s possible that NetherRealm are simply not open to licensing at the moment.
So far though, the progress on “Injustice 2” doesn’t seem to be a good consolation for those who were hoping to see more content for “Mortal Kombat X”. If it’s true that NetherRealm have no plans to work on additional content for the game until they’re done with their work on “Injustice 2”, then they might as well not even make “Kombat Pack 3” at all, as it will be far too late at that point.
After all, reports claim that the company will be able to bring out “Kombat Pack 3” in 2018 at the earliest if they really do want to prioritize “Injustice 2” right now, and that would be simply unacceptable for pretty much all fans of the game. It’s not very common that games get DLC so long after their initial release, and when it happens, it’s usually at least supported with some more minor releases along the way.
