Walt’s daughter Cady, played by Cassidy Freeman, is concerned that her father refuses to move on after the death of her mother. While he was preparing to run for re-election, Walt has delegated most of his police duties to his deputies Branch Connaly, played by Bailey Chase, and ‘The Ferg,’ played by Adam Bartley.
However, Connally entered the election to unseat Longmire as sheriff. The even worse part for Longmire is that Connally is also secretly dating his daughter Cady.
Meanwhile, Victoria ‘Vic’ Moretti, played by Katee Sackhoff, a transplanted Philadelphia homicide detective, arrived in Wyoming six months prior and is now one of Walt’s deputies.
Walt’s longtime friend Henry Standing Bear assists with any dealings of the county with the local Indian reservation.
In Season 4 of “Longmire,” Walt, Vic, and the Ferg set out to search for Branch after discovering a typewritten note on his home computer. Walt eventually finds Branch dead in a river from what appears to be a self-inflicted shotgun wound, but he refuses to rule it out as suicide. He apparently found dirt in the shotgun shell which means that the gun had been fired and the ejected shell has just been put back into the gun.
Eventually, a drunken Barlow Connally confessed to Walt for killing Branch after finding out that Barlow was the one who killed Walt’s wife. Walt eventually shoots and kills Barlow, furthering the suspicion around the main character for the most part of the fourth season.
