Lexus Fortifies Hold on the Midsize Luxury SUV Segment with 2016 RX 350 and 2016 RX 450h

Lexus has strengthened its grasp on the midsize luxury SUV segment with the unveiling of the new, fourth-generation models of the RX300, the 2016 RX 350 and the 2016 RX 450h, at the New York International Auto Show. The h on the RX 450h means that it’s a hybrid car model.

Lexus is the the luxury division of Japanese carmaker Toyota. It lays claim to the fact that it was the pioneer in the midsize luxury SUV with the introduction of the first RX 300 back in 1998.

And it’s 25% share of the sales in the particular market segment is the perfect indication of how dominating the carmaker has become in its class. Lexus hopes to sustain its lofty position with the launching of the two new models featuring significant redesign while maintaining the signature RX look, notes C/Net.

Groundbreaking design

What really makes the new RX models stand out is the combination of metal, chrome and glass in the new design of the connection between the roof and the body of the cars. The glass would really look as if it’s continuously covering the side to the rear window, framed from the roofline. It looks quite seamless from the back view.

In reality however, it is just an optical illusion. Lexus simply redesigned the glass to flow around the pillars on the outside. But it was not meant to trick the eye but only for structural and safety purposes.

The 2016 Lexus RX 350 and the RX 450h come with angular designs highlighted by well-defined shoulders, boxy wheel arches, and the signature spindle front end. A gaping maw with a mesh grille can be seen on the RX 350 while the RX 450h features the wide but very fine bars.

Strong powertrains

As an SUV, the RX 350 and RX 450h has the strength typical for vehicles of its class as both are powered by 3.5-liter six-cylinder V6 engines.

The RX 350 makes use of the revised version of the Toyota/Lexus 3.5-liter V6 engine with direct injection ably complemented by an eight-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the RX 450h makes use of the 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 engine backstopped by the Toyota/Lexus hybrid synergy drive system. Both engines are capable of dishing off maximum power of 300 horsepower.

The new midsize SUVs shall also feature superb handling and comfortable ride especially with its two-inch longer wheelbase compared to the previous models. It also has a more rigid body than the early editions of the RX.
