However, human error can still take anyone by surprise, and sometimes people say things they didn’t intend to at the moment – Lena Dunham gave a good example of that recently, after the managed to start a rumor that she’s possibly engaged to Jack Antonoff with just a few words.
During the Sundance Film Festival, while Lena Dunham was talking about Rachel Antonoff, Jack Antonoff’s sister, she referred to her as her “sister-in-law”. She didn’t follow up that comment with any other statements, and didn’t show any obvious signs that she didn’t mean to say it, but there have also been reports of spotting her with an engagement ring earlier in the month, so it’s very likely that this could be true at this point.
Unsurprisingly to anyone, reporters at the scene were eager to find out more and tried pressing Dunham to say something else about her relationship with Antonoff, but she refused to make any further comments. However, Dunham did seem to notice the change in everyone’s attitude when she dropped the line about Rachel Antonoff, as she told Dana Schuster, one of the reporters interviewing her at the time.
Dunham and Antonoff have been in a relationship for about two years now, dating since 2012. It’s interesting to note that Dunham has previously made a claim that she does not plan on getting married until same-sex marriage has been legalized across the entire nation. Recently, there have been talks about the Supreme Court allowing states to legalize same-sex marriage on an individual basis, so maybe this has sparked Dunham’s optimism, and she’s finally decided to take her relationship to the next level.
There is also another angle that some have been considering – that Dunham did not slip at all, and she made the statement in a very calculated manner, as she just wanted to stir up some hype about her relationship in an easy way. Announcing her engagement directly may or may not have had a strong impact on the media, but by forcing everyone to speculate, she can realistically get a lot more discussion going, and as a result improve her popularity even more.
In any case, if Dunham really is engaged to Antonoff, the news will likely find its way to the public one way or another soon enough, and fans will start hearing rumors about the upcoming wedding through various channels. It’s hard to keep something like this a secret with so many eyes focused on oneself, and Dunham should be one to know that.
