There have been various rumors about “Left 4 Dead 3” lately, and while many of Valve’s fans were convinced that the studio is preparing to announce the title very soon, it might turn out that the case is the exact opposite. If the latest rumors are true, Valve are not only not planning to announce “Left 4 Dead 3” anytime soon – but the title might have been scrapped entirely.
This would certainly be disappointing to many fans of the studio, but it could also make sense. All we’ve seen of “Left 4 Dead 3” so far have been promotional screenshots for Source 2, Valve’s upcoming next-gen engine. And while this led some to believe that the title was indeed being worked on, others assumed that it was rather just a test bed for the development of the company’s engine. And that might just be the case if what we’re hearing right now is true.
However, it should be noted that the rumors don’t explicitly say that Valve themselves have scrapped the title, but rather that Turtle Rock Studios – who were behind the original concept – have decided that it’s too much effort to coordinate their work with a studio as remote as Valve’s (relative to their own), so they have distanced themselves from the project at this point.
This could still mean that Valve may decide to finish the game by themselves though, and it’s certainly possible that they will do it if they are already developing it as their main game for Source 2. Of course, we don’t know if this is actually the case, and it’s possible that they are also working on another more important title along with the engine – such as the iconic “Half-Life 3”, but they did specifically preview their new technology with a remade level from the “Left 4 Dead” franchise.
Valve have been very mysterious about their work in general, especially lately, and many of their fans have been wondering what the studio is working on at the moment. They have been releasing various updates for “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” as well as “Dota 2”, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary. Meanwhile, there have been no news about any new games coming by the studio, which has been worrying to some of their fans.
The problem, according to some, is that the studio has become too comfortable in their current situation of being the leader on the PC market, and they are earning enough money from Steam that they don’t really need to make games anymore. And while this might be disappointing to many of their fans, it’s certainly a possibility.
