Lady Gaga is the song diva of the month. After performing with Tony Bennett during the 57th Annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on February 8, the “Bad Romance” singer was back at The Academy Awards stage on February 22 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
Only this time, she was not singing a classic duet, she was singing a four-song medley from the movie “The Sound of Music” shown 50 years ago.
The Oscars has decided to pay tribute to the musical film and they could not have picked a better music artist to deliver the rendition. Lady Gaga was superb.
In contrast to her signature flamboyant concerts, it was all about the voice as Lady Gaga sang four songs from the beloved 1965 classic musical movie while being accompanied by a string combo and a choir, details Yahoo! News from an AFP report.
Lady Gaga performed four songs from the film including “The Sound of Music,” “My Favourite Things,” “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
Her excellent and riveting performance brought the Oscar house down that it actually generated a standing ovation after she was through.
Maria takes the center stage
After Lady Gaga’s rendition of “The Sound of Music” tribute, she gave way to Julie Andrews, now 79 years old, who announced the winner of the Oscar for best original score – Alexandre Desplat for the “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
Andrews also expressed her appreciation to Lady Gaga for the wonderful tribute to the great classic. She said that it really warmed her heart listening to Lady Gaga’s moving rendition of the songs in the movie.
The Britain-born actress also said that she could not believe that a half of a century has already passed since she and Christopher Plummer made the movie. She added that she just blinked and all of a sudden, she’s already where she is now.
Julie Andrews played the role of Maria in the movie. She said that everyone felt blessed being part of that great movie and she also felt very lucky at that time.
“The Sound of Music” is the cinematic tale of the musical von Trapp family in Austria and their mischievous governess Maria. It is certified a Hollywood classic that it was only fitting that the Oscars has paid tribute to the film on its 50th year.
The movie garnered five Oscars in 1965 including Best Picture and Best Director. The movie was directed by Robert Wise, who brought to the big screen the eponymous 1959 hit Broadway musical.
Thrilled and honored
For her part, Lady Gaga who wore a white Azzedine Alaia gown during the tribute to “The Sound of Music” at the Oscars said that she was thrilled and honored to being given the opportunity to deliver a very special tribute performance to a great movie classic.
She said that she really put her heart into it to ensure that she captures the essence of the songs.
The 28-year-old singer-songwriter was also bereft of any unorthodox looks that she was previously known for. She came out of the stage looking very prim, proper and quite elegant too.

Her performance was exquisite. Bravo, Lady Gaga!
