At 10-45 win-loss record in the NBA as of February 22, the New York Knicks still have 27 games left in the current season.
The team’s record was 10-43 before the NBA All-Star Weekend and lost its last five games prior to the break.
With the news a few days ago that the Knicks will play the rest of the season without All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony following his decision to undergo knee surgery, the team dropped their next two assignments and has now strung up seven consecutive losses.
During the Knicks last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 22, the team played so horribly that team president Phil Jackson blasted the squad by saying that the performance of his Knicks against the Cavs gave basketball gods heartburn, reports Sports Illustrated.
Jackson made the comment via Twitter. Before his slamming of the Knicks, he also tweeted that each NBA game is an opportunity for players to show their best nature and please the basketball gods and those who know what it takes to play and win.
Sorry sight on the floor
The Cavaliers literally blew the Knicks off the court with a 101-83 conquest. But the 18-point margin of victory was a bit misleading because Cleveland led by as many as 30 points during the game before coasting along towards the final minutes.
The Knicks were a sorry sight to behold on the floor during the game, shooting only 38 percent from the field and missing 19 of their 22 attempts in the three-point area.
If New York does not watch it, the team might actually make it to the roster of the 50 worst teams in the NBA since the league started.
In that infamous roster, the 50th worst team in the NBA only has 18 wins during a regular season of 82 games. If the Knicks does not want to earn the horrible distinction of the being part of the not-so-pleasant roster, it needs to at least win nine games in its last 27 outings.
That means that beginning its next game, the Knicks have to at least win one for every three games.
Drastic changes
Phil Jackson assumed the presidency of the Knicks basketball operations in March last year. He hired first-time coach Derek Fisher some three months later and made a fearless prediction then that the team would be in the playoffs.
The Knicks opened the season losing 36 of its first 41 games including a franchise record of losing 16 straight times.
Before the start of the season, the Knicks also traded center Tyson Chandler and guard Raymond Felton to the Dallas Mavericks in a six-player deal.
Last month, the Knicks traded guards Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith to the Cavaliers as Jackson told the New York Times about that time that his experiment has fallen flat on its face.
The team also bought the contract of Amar’e Stoudemire last week and had the forward-center big man packing to Dallas.
A few days ago, the Knicks announced that Melo will miss the remainder of the season because of a knee surgery.
