We haven’t heard much about “Kingdom Hearts 3” lately, and the media was relatively quiet about the game. That is, until recently, when a screenshot started circulating the Internet, showing what appeared to be a listing for the game with a Nintendo NX edition. Gamers immediately started arguing over the legitimacy of the screenshot, and many were skeptical. Now, we’ve learned that the information was indeed false as the game is not actually planned for the Nintendo NX.
It was all a misunderstanding with a retailer, who apparently used the game’s picture as a placeholder for some other software related to the Nintendo NX. In the end, the retailer apologized for the mistake and let fans know that they are not aware of any such plans from Nintendo.
On the other hand, Nintendo themselves have been quiet on the issue ever since the controversy started, but this is completely typical for the company. Nintendo are one of the more secretive companies in the game industry, and it’s rare that they address rumors about their platforms and games. In this case, people especially didn’t expect Nintendo to address the situation, as it was just a rumor.
Meanwhile, another rumor about “Kingdom Hearts 3” has appeared on the horizon, this time with a slightly more troubling tone. According to it, the game could be the last in the series, with no further sequels planned by the publisher. In addition, it could have the longest storyline in the whole franchise to make up for that fact. We don’t know exactly how long the game could be, but if it’s true that the series will end with it, we definitely don’t expect the same length as the previous installments.
The director of the game recently gave an interview which confirmed the claims for the game’s length, but didn’t say much else about the studio’s plans. Of course, if Square Enix really are planning to discontinue the franchise after this game, they probably won’t flaunt that fact so openly at first. In fact, they will probably wait for the hype around “Kingdom Hearts 3” to die down a bit after releasing the game, after which fans should be more receptive of such news.
On the other hand, another rumor claims that there will still be new releases in the series, they just won’t be major ones. We don’t know exactly what that means and what it could imply for the future of the franchise, but fans would probably not mind getting the occasional extra DLC release for “Kingdom Hearts 3” if the design of the game allows for it.
In addition, the interview with Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the director has had to cut various pieces from the game in order to fit the project within some reasonable constraints. It’s possible that these cut pieces could be used as extra content in the future, as it would be a shame to abandon them after they’ve been planned. Fans will likely always wonder what the game could have included if every planned feature had been given the green light.
So, for now, the game is still only confirmed for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If other platforms are added to the mix, we expect that the announcement would be made early on, as it doesn’t make much sense to withhold that kind of information all the way until the game’s release. After all, it will help bring even more attention to the game if it’s true.
