The US government can’t keep a check on the maximum price of a drug and neither can they regulate the prices. In England, if the companies do not follow the maximum price bracket set by the government, then they can end up losing their whole market. This ensures that the price remains fair, something that is completely absent in the US.
The US has a free marker when it comes to pharmaceuticals, and the companies can settle their prices on their own. It is worth noting that Medicare, the government health program that is also the largest purchaser of drugs in the country, is not allowed to partake in the negotiation for drugs.
According to NY Mag, while Kaleo is receiving criticism from all for hiking the price of naloxone, it should be kept in mind that the company has donated a large number of its product to different cities and drug treatment programs.
It should also be noted that Kaleo exhausted it donation supply last year and now by making its product even more expensive, it has prevented those in need of it from purchasing the same. The state of Vermont has reported a high case of opioid overdose, but the rise in price has stopped people from buying the overdose-reversal drug.
