A few days short of one month after it was officially released to worldwide theaters, the dinosaur film “Jurassic World” is literally and figuratively romping its way to the roster of the biggest grossing movies of all time.
About two weeks ago, “Jurassic World” was holding the 17th spot in the list of all-time highest grossing films, one slot higher than “Jurassic Park,” the first movie of the franchise shown way back in 1993.
But as of July 8, “Jurassic World” has made its way from the 17th position to the fourth spot with worldwide box office revenues of $1.387 Billion, dislodging Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” which earned $1.383 Billion as listed in the Box Office Mojo.
As the movie is active and is still being shown on theaters, it is likely that “Jurassic World” might overtake the fourth running “Fast & Furious 7” which has earned $1.511 Billion already since its opening in early April this year.
As the difference between “Fast & Furious 7” and third running “Marvel’s The Avengers,” shown back in 2012, is a mere $7 million, it is likely that the dinosaur movie will also gobble the latter in the list before settling at the third spot.
It is highly unlikely for “Jurassic World” to move up from the third spot because second-running “Titanic,” shown in 1997, is safely perched with $2.186 Billion earnings. “Avatar,” another James Cameron movie like “Titanic,” is at the No. 1 spot with $2.788 Billion box-office sales.
Director says film trailer reveals too much
Despite the huge commercial success of “Jurassic World,” Director Colin Trevorrow has criticized the marketing team of the production company for revealing too much of the movie during its trailer.
In a recent interview, Trevorrow said that the marketing people have shown far more of the movie than he would have wanted in the film’s trailer.
Trevorrow’s comment actually stems from the same comment that Director Alan Taylor has recently said about his movie “Terminator Genisys” currently showing on theaters. Taylor said that the trailer campaign of his movie revealed too much of the film’s plot.
The “Jurassic World” director previously questioned the release of the first trailer of the movie a few months back, citing it as sexist.
In particular, Trevorrow was not happy when the trailer showed lead actor Chris Pratt riding his motorcycle and being chased by four velociraptors, which baffled many audiences. The director said that the audience’s suspension of disbelief has to be earned and, unfortunately, it was not the case for the trailer, reports The Guardian.
Fastest-grossing film
Apart from being on course to becoming the third biggest grossing film of all time, “Jurassic World” already has the title of being the fastest grossing film of all time. While the basis was previously in North America but the way it climbed the roster of top grossing movies of all time in a matter of three to four weeks, it is undoubtedly the fastest earner of all time.
The latest dinosaur movie “Jurassic World” officially becomes the third movie of the year in a span of less than three months to join the elite roster of Billion Dollar Club for films that have earned US$1 billion or more, joining “Fast & Furious 7” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which made it to the list in April and May, respectively.
The three movies are this year’s biggest blockbusters thus far and since they are still on the active list and have potentials to earn more especially when its home video versions are officially released a few months down the road, they will likely move further up the ladder.
It is likely that at least two more films will join the three films of 2015 in the roster of the Billion Dollar Club and that would likely be “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to be released in December, and the next James Bond film “Spectre,” showing in November.
