The cat is out of the bag that celebrity couple, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, has just made their way to splitsville.
This was confirmed on May 23 when Amber Heard filed for divorce in a US court citing irreconcilable difference with Johnny Depp as the reason for the filing.
The 30-year-old actress made the filing on a Los Angeles Superior Court some 15 months after their marriage early in February last year, reports BBC.
Just months after their marriage last year, pundits and critics were already betting that their union would not last a year given the partying habits of Amber Heard while Johnny Depp was in Australia last year filming “Pirates of the Caribbean 5.”
Proving the rumors wrong
As if to prove the rumors were wrong and the bets on their marriage would fall flat on their faces, Amber Heard even flew to Australia in April onboard Johnny Depp’s private plane and brought with her their two Yorkshire pet dogs.
The incident actually caused an uproar with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources as Minister Barnaby Joyce cited it as a breach of local quarantine laws. Apparently, the Yorkshire pets were taken into Australia without proper documentation and without undergoing quarantine procedures.
Joyce gave an ultimatum to Heard to take back the dogs to the US or have the dogs euthanized in Australia. Depp chartered another private plane to fly back his wife and two dogs shortly thereafter.
After the brouhaha, Amber Heard told the media that the Australian minister was just looking for his 15 minutes of fame. That riled up Joyce who went on to become an Australian Deputy Minister so he pursued a case against the actress.
Just last month, Heard went back to Australia and pleaded guilty to a charge of falsifying documents and it was likely that the Australian court has meted her a financial penalty for the felony but not jail time.
A short-lived marriage
Depp and Heard may have overcome the projections of critics and pundits that their marriage would not last a year because it sure did.
However, the critics were still right on cue when they said that their marriage would not last because 15 months of marriage is very short indeed.
Incidentally, Amber Heard filed the divorce against Johnny Depp, just three days after the death of the actor’s mother which surely had the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star reeling emotionally.
But the actor has yet to make a comment or statement regarding the filing of divorce by Amber Heard. It seems clear however that the celebrity couple has parted ways weeks or months before the filing.
Incidentally, Amber Heard has also asked spousal support from Depp. But the actor, through his lawyer Laura Wasser, has asked the court to junk Heard’s petition.
However, some are saying that Depp may be obligated by the court to support his former wife because they did not sign a prenuptial agreement when they got married.
Depp’s fortune is estimated at US$400 million which includes his private island in the Caribbean called Little Hall’s Pond Clay, notes News.com.au.
Johnny Depp was at the 2016 Grammy Awards red carpet in February and when he was asked if he would return to Australia if given the chance, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor said yes without batting an eyelash.
The reporter’s question was obviously an allusion to the big issue that Johnny Depp and his then wife Amber Heard caused in Australia last year when they failed to declare their two Yorkshire terriers, Boo and Pistol, when she flew to Australia onboard his private jet to be with her then husband while he was filming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”
