“Jessica Jones” was one of the more successful recent TV shows, and its fans just can’t stop talking about the first season even months after it came out. The showrunners took some risks – something practically inevitable in the current climate on the TV scene – and it all paid off very well for them. Now, fans are wondering what’s coming up for season 2, and when exactly the next round of episodes is going to be released. And at the current pace, it looks like it will be a somewhat long wait.
Netflix have been stepping up their production work and they are currently very busy on several fronts, so work on “Jessica Jones” season 2 isn’t set to commence until next year. While that’s a long wait, it’s also a good sign – it means that the writers should have plenty of time to sort out the story that they want to tell, and now that they’ve laid the foundations for all the different characters, they can start digging deeper into their personalities in various ways.
It sounds like this is exactly what’s going to happen too, as current teasers about the second season of the show talk about a more personal approach to storytelling. Jessica herself is going to be explored in detail, and she will have to face a real conflict throughout the new season which will reveal what she’s really made of.
At the same time, there will also be a stronger focus on auxiliary plot lines, instead of just focusing on the main arc. We don’t have any details about that yet, but fans of the show have a few guesses about who season 2 might be focused on. Of course, we don’t expect the showrunners to give any major spoilers for this, but they definitely won’t be quiet with the hints throughout the next months either. After all, they would be silly to ignore the huge hype surrounding it right now.
An interesting bit of speculation that we’ve seen is that the second season of the show might take a less traditional approach to the antagonist of the story. Season 1 was very clear-cut in this regard, and fans quickly grew to hate Killgrave – while at the same time, we saw some expositions about him which put him in a different light.
According to some, season 2 could put Jessica in a different kind of conflict to shake things up, omitting the role of the traditional antagonist in favor of something more dramatic. It’s already been shown that Jessica has some very significant internal struggles of her own, and it’s possible that season 2 will be about her fighting against her own self. There have already been hints about that throughout season 1, but admittedly many of them might be the product of confirmation bias. In any case, the possibility that this could happen has been alluded to by more than one source already, so we’ll have to wait and see what the producers have in mind.
This could also go along with the claims about a more personal second season, as an internal struggle would be the perfect way to explore the character of Jessica in deep detail. Pitting her against a scary antagonist is one thing, but the story can be made a lot more interesting by forcing her to battle against her own character. Especially now that we’ve seen what she’s capable of in the first place.
