Some months ago, film director David Ayer gave fans a sneak peek on his Instagram account by posting a photo Jared Leto’s first look as his villainous alter ego, The Joker in the upcoming movie “Suicide Squad” based on DC Comics.
Now, more photos of Leto’s The Joker on set have leaked the internet and fans are getting their first taste of scare from the clown prince of crime. The 43-year old actor was recently spotted on the set sporting his full Joker costume in Toronto on June 17 while filming the movie.
Although he was wearing a black coat concealing his full look, photos suggest that Leto really got into the nitty gritty details of his character—from the blood-stained nails, cryptic tattoos to the sharp silvery teeth.
Donning The Joker’s iconic colors in a button-down shirt, undone bow-tie, pale skin and green hair to cap it off, the Oscar-winning actor’s eerie transformation appeared perfectly evil and terrifying as Task Force X is. From his looks alone, it is no wonder his co-star Scott Eastwood was afraid to talk to him let alone approach him on the set.
Also spotted on the set in full get-up was actress Margot Robbie who plays Leto’s on-screen girlfriend Harley Quinn. Ayer already confirmed that since most of the film’s outdoor shooting is done, the rest of the film will take place inside Warner Bros studios so Leto being photographed in his monstrous look was a great way to fodder the fans’ excitement.
Ayer also assured fans that amid all filming they’ve done in public resulting to numerous photos from set leaking online, no major plot on the comic’s film adaptation has been revealed.
The Joker is one of the much-awaited character DC fans are eager to see when “Suicide Squad” hits theaters August 5 next year but rumors of Leto’s performance as the iconic villain beating actors who took on the same role are already floating.
Jack Nicholson took on the role back in 1989 while the late Heath Ledger also played The Joker in 2008 before his untimely death. While the acting and look comparisons cannot be deemed accurate yet as the film is still underway, Leto’s transformation evidently implies how he will fill in the shoes of Batman’s psychotic nemesis.
Leto is known to be a method actor, being devoted wholly to his character and immersing himself in roles he portrays. He earned wide critical acclaims and an Oscar for his role as a transgender woman and a drug addict in the film “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2013.
Ayer told Billboard that Leto’s The Joker is a beautiful disaster of a character even claiming that the actor’s portrayal is a big challenge. While fans still can’t get hold of The Joker’s creepy look, it looks like Leto himself already can.
