After much controversy recently, and six years in office, Jan Brewer, governor of Arizona, has decided to step down from her position. The Republican was a strong opponent and critic of President Obama and his entire administration throughout her time in office, and she naturally didn’t miss the opportunity to take one final jab at Obama and his presidency before she left for good, calling him a “failed president”.
She went on to explain that Obama has been a big disappointment to her, and he has committed acts that have left a very negative impression of him in her eyes, going as far as to say that she would never expect such acts to be committed by a current president. Indeed, the former governor has gone through some prolonged legal battles with the Obama administration over the years, mostly due to some provisions in Arizona’s immigration bill, which were deemed quite strict.
However, federal courts have mostly rejected the provisions in the bill, citing them as unconstitutional, with some small but notable exceptions. In one example, Brewer wanted to forbid young undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver’s licenses, something which she stated was quite necessary and has been for a long time now. However, her proposal wasn’t met with the approval she apparently expected, and in the end she had to face stark rejection.
The governor has been putting a lot of effort into controlling the border that her state shares with Mexico, but in the end, she stated that she felt she wasn’t doing as much as she wanted to, and was hoping she could do even more work in the future. For now though, she’s resigning from her position as governor, and she’s moving on to other endeavors in her career.
One thing Brewer wanted to make clear as she was leaving was that she was not a racist as some have been trying to portray her, she was merely concerned for the wellbeing of American citizens, and wanted to protect her state from illegal immigrants. While some have been sharing her views on immigration and the problems it’s been causing for the US, there has been a rather universal note of agreement that Brewer’s methods in trying to resolve those problems have been often far too harsh, and she was inconsiderate towards people.
It’s not clear what Brewer plans to do now, although many are suspecting that this isn’t the last the public will hear of her, and she plans to come back with even more and harsher moves against immigrants at some point in the future, though it’s not known what angle she plans to approach this from, after she gave up her position as a governor.
