Is the Sony Xperia Z4 about to Face Harsh Competition on Its Launch Day

A lot is expected to happen in the tech world in 2015, as various major companies are preparing for their own big announcements, including Apple, Samsung and Sony. And while Apple are not expected to make their moves until spring/summer, Sony and Samsung are likely about to clash in the announcement of their next serious releases. Sony’s Xperia Z4, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S6, are currently both expected to be announced at the same time in March, during the MWC 2015.

Sony were expected to make the big announcement at the CES 2015, but after the show came and passed without any major announcement, fans started eyeing other major electronics-related events as the possible date. Samsung are already expected to announce the Galaxy S6 at the MWC 2015, so if Sony have indeed decided to move their announcement to that event, there will be a major clash for attention between the two companies.

The situation certainly isn’t helped by the fact that the two devices are not that far off from each other in terms of specifications, with the Xperia Z4 coming with a 5.2 inch display running at a 2K resolution, and is a noticeable upgrade over the Z3, with a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 20.7 MP camera on the back; while opposite that, the Galaxy S6 is rumored to have a QuadHD resolution, 15.9 megapixel camera, and a 64-bit Snapdragon processor. Both devices are expected to ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

They each have their advantages and disadvantages compared to one another, but they’re both in roughly the same market segment, which should make this situation interesting if both companies decide to go ahead with their announcements at the same time. Various publications have already started speculating on the possible split in attention between Sony and Samsung when they make their revelations, although Samsung seem to have a stronger following right now, with more people anticipating their release.

Sony’s fanbase is not small itself at all though, and the company is also known for being very reasonable with their pricing, always paying serious consideration to the current situation of the market, as well as the demands of their fans. It’s not unlikely that the Xperia Z4 could be a better deal than the Galaxy S6 in terms of price, but those looking for a truly powerful Android phone from a well-established brand should probably not disregard the S6. It will likely cost a little more (although even that’s not certain at this point), but the price should be more than justified in terms of specifications, as well as support from the manufacturer after release.
