Teeth whitening has traditionally been a somewhat controversial topic. On one hand, plenty of experts have stood by the opinion that it’s perfectly safe and shouldn’t be seen as anything harmful when done right – on the other, there are also those with the opinion that the procedure holds its risks, and should be approached with extreme caution. Most recently, Julie Walters came out speaking against teeth whitening, sharing a bad experience she’s had with the procedure when she attempted to remove green tea stains from her teeth.
The actress is known for being against various cosmetic procedures in general, particularly surgical intervention for cosmetic purposes – but until now, she hasn’t specifically mentioned teeth whitening in the same context. Now, she stated that when she tried to bleach her teeth, the pain was so intense that she was forced to cancel the whole procedure just a few days in.
What drove her to try out teeth whitening in the first place was her recent heavy consumption of green tea, which has apparently left a stain on her smile. The actress tried to resolve the problem through teeth whitening, deciding to give the procedure a try, but she ended up severely disappointed. According to her, green tea has had a prominent place in her diet for quite a long time now – over twenty years, in fact – and as much as she enjoys the beverage, it’s also been causing some problems for her.
Her dentist provided her with a solution for home treatment, which she had to apply on her own. Admittedly, it did help Walters remove her coffee stains at least, but that’s as far as she could go – the procedure was reportedly too painful for her to go on. She stated that in the end, she preferred to leave the rest of her stains as they were instead of suffering any longer.
In the end, she expanded a bit on her views on cosmetic surgery, stating that she finds it ridiculous how much effort some prominent celebrity figures are putting into trying to look younger than they are. According to her, she just accepts her age for what it is, and rolls with the effects as they come. This is an approach that various other celebrities have been following as well, although Walters does have a point. The number of famous people undergoing various heavy cosmetic procedures just to knock a few years off their appearances is staggering, and it’s easy to see the argument that Julie Walters is making. Of course, in the end, a person’s body is their own only, and they get to decide what happens to it.
