There’s no denying the popularity of the Spider-Man franchise – and in particular, when one looks at the success of “The Amazing Spider-Man 3”, it’s pretty obvious that Sony have struck gold by handling this series. It seems that the company wants to expand Spider-Man’s reach even more though, as they have been reportedly thinking of a spin-off from the series, with a rather surprising choice of main character.
The new production is rumored to be focused around Aunt May, featuring her in a spy-themed role in a film that will be an overall departure from the storytelling style of “The Amazing Spider-Man”. While it’s been rumored (and hinted) before that the studio wants to break out from the mold of the current series and try something new, few were expecting this particular choice of main character.
However, the decision is not all that surprising when the actress herself is taken into consideration. Many have been pointing out that her role in the films has been one of the strongest presences on the screen, and she has contributed a lot to the success of the previous installments. With that in mind, it would make sense to give some more focus to her character – plus, many fans have grown fond of Aunt May’s character, in particular the version presented in “The Amazing Spider-Man”.
It should be noted that Sally Fields may or may not actually play the part in this particular movie, as it’s rumored to be about the earlier life of Peter Parker’s aunt, which would likely call for a younger actress. The exact age difference isn’t known, and film make-up professionals have done more impressive things before, so it may not be that unexpected to see Fields herself playing the role.
So far, there is quite a lot going on at the Spider-Man front, with various spin-offs coming from the main line and reaching an even broader audience. While this is generally good, as it means more revenue to be invested into the future development of the series, some fans have been critical of the rapid pace at which Sony are expanding the franchise, and have been stating that the company should take a step back and slow down.
If the production of the new spin-off is handled properly though, it should certainly be nothing bad, and it would make for some extra entertainment for Spider-Man fans. Whether or not it will catch on and become a separate series of its own is far too early to tell, especially considering this is all mostly a rumor so far. However, branching out a spy story from the main Spider-Man plotline would certainly be interesting to see.
