Following the announcement of the upcoming release of the “Invincible Iron Man” comic book of Brian Michael Bendis in December, word started spreading around that the upcoming “Iron Man 4” movie might take the plotline of the comic book.
In particular, fans are getting excited about the prospects of having to see Tony Stark meeting Peter Parker’s ex-girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, and possibly starting a romantic relationship.
Bendis explained that Tony and MJ know each other from way back because she lives in the Avengers Tower. However, the writer refuses to divulge any further detail because the kind of relationship that the two will apparently have is the major reason why readers and fans will buy the comic book, notes the International Business Times of India.
However, some astute fans of both the “Iron Man” and the “Spider-Man” franchises can see something that most others don’t and that is the possible age difference between Tony Stark and Mary Jane Watson.
Ages will matter
When Peter Parker makes his formal entry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year via the “Captain America: Civil War” movie to hit theaters on May 6, 2016, he will basically be a teenager and thus, Spider-Man will also be a youngster.
Based on recent reports, it will actually be Tony Stark who shall design the new costume of Spider-Man in the MCU, which others have been referring to as the Iron Spider suit.
One year after “Captain America: Civil War,” Spider-Man will star in his own solo movie, the “Spider-Man” film reboot where Peter Parker will again be in high school. Based on the original story of Spider-Man, both in the comic books and on the films, Mary Jane Watson is a childhood friend of Peter Parker so their ages pretty much approximate each other.
With that being said, Tony Stark and MJ Watson will have a very big age gap if and when Marvel decides to play up the plotline that Bendis will be doing or has done in the “Invincible Iron Man” comic book.
But considering that it is a cinematic universe, Marvel will always find a way to make the age difference disappear on the thoughts of fans with a snap of the finger.
A windfall for RDJ
Another thing that is certain at this point as far as “Iron Man 4” is concerned, the movie will give actor Robert Downey Jr. a windfall when it is finally shown in phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will be from 2019 onwards.
The Christian Post confirmed previous reports that it is possible that RDJ might get more than $100 million for his portrayal of Tony Stark and Iron Man come “Iron Man 4.” And that assumption actually stands on a good leg because the world’s highest paid actor for three years running was actually paid $80 million for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” shown in May this year.
He is expected to get $40 million for “Captain America: Civil War” when it hits cinemas next year. And these two movies are not even RDJ’s solo movies like the “Iron Man” movie series. Thus it follows, that the actor would likely get no less than $100 million when the time has finally arrived and he already has to do “Iron Man 4.”
The figure could actually go further up than $100 million and it will depend on how much he would get when he stars in the two-part third Avengers movie titled “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2″ to hit theaters on 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Meanwhile, the superhero versus villain plot has become so overused in the superhero movies that the main storylines have been twisted to pit superhero versus another superhero.
That will be the case with the upcoming Warner Bros movie based on DC Comics “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” pitting the Caped Crusader against the Man of Steel.
I can’t wait for Iron Man 4! I can’t believe Robert Downey jr. is likely going to make more than 100 million dollars. We need to see Iron Man face the REAL Mandarin this time. He’s going to probably be as rich as his character, Tony Stark. Robert Downey should NOT turn down the role of Iron Man. The Mandarin needs to be the villain of Iron Man 4. Iron Man 4 should be the last Iron Man film.
Man… I really hope Tony Stark and Mary-Jane Watson don’t get in a relationship in Iron Man 4. Tony Stark is way too old for Mary-Jane. That would be super weird and disturbing seeing Tony and Mary-Jane as a couple in a movie. It would only work in a comic book, but not in a movie. It will disturb the audience if they both get in a romantic relationship together. Tony Stark needs to stick with Pepper Potts, and Peter Parker needs to stick with Mary-Jane Watson. At the end of Iron Man 4, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts should get married.
