Iran-Pakistan Ties Secure Peace in Middle East: Haghani

Iran Pakistan Border

Iran and Pakistan have always enjoyed close and friendly relations over the past decades. Following the Iranian Revolution and overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the two nations agreed to promote economic and political ties.

Over the past few months, Iranian MPs and politicians have repeatedly warned of insecurity in Iran-Pakistan border. According to reports, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has personally talked to his Pakistani counterpart with regard to security in Pakistan and borders.

Last month, Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl carried out an attack in Iran-Pakistan border killing dozens of Iranian soldiers. Pakistan has been widely criticized by Iranian officials for not suing members of Jaish al-Adl.

A political analyst Farzad Haghani says Iran and Pakistan need to sign security agreements in order to reduce the number of attacks carried out by militant groups which are mainly based in Pakistan.

“I believe that Pakistani officials should take a decisive decision concerning the security in Iran-Pakistan border. In long-run, security problems in borders will hurt mutual relations between the two nations,” Farzad Haghani told the Master Herald.

According to Haghani, insecurity in Iran-Pakistan border may also damage the security of Middle East. “In fact, almost all Middle Eastern militant groups are linked to each other. If the Iranian and Pakistani governments fail to control insecurities in borders, the Middle East region will be affected by this huge problem,”

Farzad Haghani called on regional and world powers to provide assistance to Pakistani government in this regard. “In my opinion, the U.S. government can mediate and offer security services to Pakistan.”

The Iranian government has already started building a border barrier along its border with Pakistan. However, local people have requested the government to stop constructing the wall. This wall is being constructed to stop militants from carrying out terrorist attacks in Iran.
