Over the past few years, the Iranian government has been criticized for supporting and empowering Islamic militant groups in the Middle East region. The country had made it clear that it proudly supports militant groups which are fighting against the Israeli government. Iran has already donated millions of dollars to the Palestine-based militant group, Hamas.
At the same time, a number of radical Islamist groups have carried out terrorist attacks on the soil of Iran. According to the official statistics released by the Iranian government, over 17,000 people have been killed because of terrorist attacks in the last three decades following the Islamic Revolution.
Iranian MP Rostam Taheri says the country will never be a ‘safe haven’ for terrorist organizations as Iran’s military forces are determined to eradicate these organizations.
“IRGC and Iran’s Army are constantly fighting against terrorist groups which are trying to carry out attacks inside the country. Unfortunately, these groups penetrate from Pakistani soil. We have already warned the Pakistani government of insecurities in Iran-Pakistan borders. We expect them to take appropriate action in this regard,” Rostam Taheri said in an interview with local media on Sunday.
Last month, President Rouhani announced that he will visit Pakistan to resolve the existing problems in shared borders.
Iran and Pakistan maintain close economical and political relations. The two countries have agreed on constructing a gas pipeline in the hope of exporting Iran’s gas to Southern Asia.
“Although we are looking to promote our economic ties with Pakistan, we also need the Pakistani side to fight against terrorist groups,” Taheri added.
According to Rostam Taheri, Iran is also ready to help Pakistan in securing the borders. “I strongly believe that the two countries should sign military agreements in order to secure the Iran-Pakistan borders.”
