Fans of “Frozen” finally got their long-awaited news some weeks ago when it was officially confirmed that a sequel is in the works, after much speculation and various rumors that were floating around. And yet the excitement might die down quickly, as it turns out that the new film won’t be ready for quite some time. Currently, it’s planned for a 2018 release, which means that production on it likely hasn’t even started yet.
Therefore, any rumors concerning the plot that have come out recently can probably be ignored, unless the writers for the film are actually already done with their part of the work, which doesn’t seem very likely at the moment.
Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell will be coming back for the new film, much to the delight of fans of the original, and there might even be some surprises among the cast if current rumors are true. Of course, it’s hard to confirm anything with the mysterious state of the movie right now, but we can safely guess that Disney are going to go to great lengths to ensure that this film is memorable.
They are always very careful when it comes to sequels, as they understand the importance of not letting their fans down. Especially when it comes to a film like “Frozen” which saw such huge success in its original release. Disney are likely focusing a lot on this film and making sure that they polish it completely in every possible aspect, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they do something more unexpected for the cast selection.
They did hint at a “great idea” for the sequel, courtesy of Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, but we got no further explanation about what’s currently planned for the film. One of the current rumors claims that there will be a new villain in the film, with completely new powers that will change the dynamic of the storyline quite a bit, as they’re based on fire.
Prince Hans could also make a comeback for the next film, returning as a new man. We don’t know what that means exactly, and it could have various implications, both positive and negative, but of course Disney are likely not going to do anything that will disappoint their fans. We’ve heard reports that Disney are trying to be LGBT-friendly with this film and even attempting to integrate some relevant themes in its plot, so that might be related to the changes in the character, but we can’t say for sure. It’s definitely a good move for Disney to take the film in that direction though.
FINALLY, an article that isn’t making wild claims that “Hans is going to marry Elsa” or “Chris Buck is basing it off of Oz”
You’re right, all of the rumors should be duly ignored until we can get some REAL information from Buck or Lee. And no, as far as we know, the writing is nowhere near done yet.
But the 2018 release date wasn’t really a surprise. In fact, as far as I know, that date has yet to be confirmed by Walt Disney Animation Studios; it is speculation by the fans that it will be released in 2018. It’s an educated guess based on their current release schedule for other movies, and the amount of time it took to write the first movie.
I should mention, too, that not only is Disney careful with sequels… they have NEVER DONE a sequel themselves. Let me be clear, I’m talking about Walt Disney Animation Studios, and not its smaller, poorly-funded subdivisions. That’s why they have a horrible track record when it comes to sequels–because they are always handled by a different group of people. So, this is a really big thing, having them make a sequel themselves.
P.S. it wasn’t announced a few weeks ago. It was announced nearly three months ago, on the day that Frozen Fever hit theaters: March 12.
