The season was primarily focused on creating the tension between the two, thickening the plot on how Claire and Frank sabotaged each other’s election bid with Frank suddenly endorsing Cecilia Jones at his State of the Union address weeks after Claire returned to him.
Frank later found out that Claire had secretly been leaking information to Elizabeth Marvel’s Heather Dunbar’s campaign to fuel negative press and threatens to continue doing so unless he puts her on the ticket for Vice President, to which Frank refused.
Some reviews note that the best moments of the latest season was between episodes 4 and 5 when Sebastian Arcelus’ Lucas Goodwin shocked the audience when he shot Frank in the stomach causing a bullet to pierce the politician’s liver.
The tension was amplified when Frank was left on the edge of death and everybody got a taste of how Claire takes over the government through sly and calculated political maneuvering.
Joel Kinnaman was also praised for his role as the ambitious Governor Will Conway, the governor of New York and the Republican presidential bet.
Season 4 ended with Claire joining Frank in breaking the fourth wall with trademark elegance, acknowledging her husband and running mate’s monologue before staring down the camera lens herself.
