The last season of “Homeland” didn’t end very pleasantly, as far as the subplot of the relationship between Carrie Mathison and Peter Quinn is concerned. While Carrie initially went up to Quinn after her father’s death, seeking comfort from him, and this lead up to their first kiss, Carrie ended up having second thoughts about the whole situation and told Quinn that she didn’t want to continue their relationship, as she was afraid of messing it up.
Quinn tries to reassure her to get her to stay, telling her that he has seen her at her worst, and they should get out together. They were separated, and Quinn was dealing with the feelings of being betrayed and going on a suicide mission, while at the same time Carrie has been trying to deal with some personal issues of her own. Her mother just came back into her life, after an absence of 20 years, and of course this is going to shake up the plot a bit.
Season 5 will continue the story two years after Carrie served as the station chief for Islamabad, and she will be shown in Berlin where she has gone on an exile on her own accord. She’s been trying to get over her guilt and her disillusioned feelings after years of working with the CIA and being on the very front of the war with terror.
She finds herself separated from the CIA and working under a private security firm, trying to start a new life. She will also have a new love interest, at least for a while – Jonas Happich, played by Alexander Fehling. Happich will be shown as a legal counsel for the Düring Foundation, and he’ll be the lover for Carrie for a while.
However, we don’t know if that relationship has any long-term prospects or if it’s just a temporary thing, and it’s still possible that Carrie and Quinn might decide to get back together. The plot can be developed in interesting ways in either case, but of course many fans have been rooting for the reunion of the two characters.
Right now, it would be a difficult ordeal due to the distance between them and the way their relationship ended at the end of season 4, but anything is possible if the writers want to do it. Rupert Friend, who plays the role of Quinn, was recently talking about his character’s future with Carrie, and according to him, he has no idea where the story is going to go next in this regard.
There is apparently no specific outline for the season, and they’re approaching the episodes on a nearly individual basis, so the actors themselves don’t know where the story will be taken next. Of course, the outline was probably just not shared with all actors, which often happens in TV productions in order to protect the integrity of the show and prevent information from leaking out.
According to Friend, his character is quite vulnerable at the moment, and he was affected by Carrie’s betrayal on a deeper level than viewers might imagine. He did respond in a very peculiar way and it looks like his character is about to face some deep struggles, and this could actually be a great lead-up to reuniting the two lovers. We don’t know if that’s the case or not, and as we said above, the actors themselves don’t seem to be aware of the situation for the time being, so we can just wait until the new episodes are aired.
