Halo 5: Guardians Gets First Round of Community Multiplayer Maps Made in the Forge!

Ever since the Forge was released for “Halo 5” and gave players the opportunity to come up with their own levels for the game, we’ve been seeing some interesting releases every now and then, and it’s quite clear that the shooter’s community has plenty of creative minds full of ideas for interesting arenas for the game. 343 Industries have been paying attention too, as they have just announced the addition of several fan-made maps into the official playlists. For now, the maps are limited to the Breakout playlist, but this seems to be more than enough for some of the game’s fans who have been waiting for new content with a lot of patience.

Around ten maps in total have been added, and fans of the game who follow the Forge scene have probably already seen at least several of them, such as “Apparition” and “Pylon”. According to the official announcement, players will get to vote on their favorite maps and the winners will get included in the official February playlist.

All maps have a somewhat darker theme than usual, but as some players have pointed out, this is just due to the Breakout mode being styled like that in general. There haven’t been any major complaints about visibility issues or aesthetic inconsistencies, so the maps seem to fit the game more or less perfectly.

Their visuals can strike as a bit bland, but this is also typical for the mode as well as for projects done with the Forge. The editor does have its limitations that players have to observe, but for the most part the more creative players have been able to work around those restrictions in pretty remarkable ways.

And while some maps quickly became fan favorites, it also didn’t take long for reports about certain issues to start rolling in. Most notably, many players have apparently already figured out exploits that allow them to leave the boundaries of some maps, giving them an unfair advantage. For a shooter with a strong competitive focus, this can quickly lead to disaster if the problems are left unaddressed. If the maps get a reputation for having balance problems, players will quickly forget about them even if those issues were eventually addressed.

The main problem, according to most, is that 343 should put more effort into the quality control for those maps, but we are sure that the studio will sort out those issues for the next installment of custom-made maps. Fans have already been bringing up various suggestions for how the studio should run the program for distributing these maps too, and most people seem to have some interesting ideas for developing the game further with the help of custom content.

It’s still good to see that the studio pays so much attention to supporting and promoting the work of their fans in any case, as this has not only added to the popularity of the game itself, it also instilled confidence in the community that the franchise is run by people who care.

Halo 5 Guardians

In general, utilizing fan-made content and promoting it to an official status is a strategy that other companies have already used successfully in the past, and we’re sure that the idea could have more merits in the future too. Especially in a project led by a company like 343 Industries with all the experience that they already have in the industry, and with the strong support of their fans.
