More story arcs are also expected to be inserted in the sequel. The first film was a success because despite the numerous story arcs such as Gamora and Quill’s romance, Nebula and Gamora’s sisterly rivalry, and probably the most emotional of them all, Groot’s sacrifice, the film still managed to be a winning investment.
New characters are also expected to be introduced in Vol. 2, but Gunn apparently wants to limit the upcoming sequel with too many unfamiliar faces and characters.
The film director stated during a Facebook Q&A that what he aims for in Vol. 2 is for the fans to get to know the Guardians deeper. That being said, the introduction of new characters is a great instrument to allow the five Guardians to stand out.
French actress Pom Klementieff has been added to the cast to play Mantis, a martial arts expert, telepath. Based on the comics, the character became an Avenger, but it remains to be seen whether she will be an official member of the Guardians team in the MCU.
One potential character that can be seen in the film is Adam Warlock, a cocoon among the Collector’s horde.
The studio has yet to confirm if Warlock will be weaved into the sequel’s storyline, but judging by the directorial style of Gunn, it would be unlikely of him to add two new heroes at the same time.
