With so much attention focused on “GTA 5” right now – even though the game has been out for a while already – Rockstar at least don’t have to worry about providing any official information about the next game in the series. At this point, everyone is aware that it will be years before we see any news about “GTA 6”, let alone the actual game itself. And yet, some members of the community enjoy speculating a lot, and there are several questions about the sequel that get brought up on a regular basis in those discussions. Most importantly, people are wondering what timeline Rockstar have in mind for the game’s development.
It’s pretty obvious that the game will not be ready anytime soon, and this can be easily seen in several factors surrounding its development. On one hand, the sheer scale of “GTA 5” means that the studio will need a significant amount of time to jump over that bar, and this is not the kind of process that can be just rushed. Games of this size need a lot of hard work and fine polishing in order to come out good enough, and Rockstar are a studio with a particular affinity for perfection, so they are even more likely to want to get this right every step of the way.
On the other hand, the studio is also somewhat notorious for their slow working pace, and they tend to take their time with their games. Fans of the company have come to expect a certain level of slowness from them and most people are fine with the situation, because they know what the final result would look like well in advance. With that in mind, seeing the game around 2020 seems to be the most reasonable theory at the moment.
The setting of the game is also under a big question mark right now, and there are rumors that Rockstar already have some plans in this regard, but they haven’t reached any conclusion yet. Several ideas have been proposed, including some real-world locations, as well as a brand new fictional town. Some people are also hopeful about the idea of seeing several of the previous “GTA” cities merged together in one grand map, but this sounds more like the wishful thinking of dedicated fans rather than anything based on official information.
And on that note, fans are also wondering if the game will be set in modern times like the last entry in the series, or if we could see an interesting change in this regard. One of the rumors that have been going around for a while now is that it could actually be set in the past, with a curious mix of certain elements from previous games thrown in. However, such a setting could have some obvious issues for the plot of the game, so we don’t know if this rumor sounds credible or not. It does sound like something Rockstar might want to explore as an option however, and the studio definitely has the ability to pull off an idea like that properly.
Another angle to consider is that there might be hints about the next game in the current one. Rockstar traditionally aren’t very direct with these hints and if there really are such details in “GTA 5”, they will probably be impossible to decipher before the next installment has been released anyway. But it’s possible that the studio could have thrown in a few such details in order to build a link to the past of the franchise, just like characters from one “GTA” game are sometimes (although rarely) referenced in another.
