“Grey’s Anatomy” has already run for so long, yet the show still has a lot to offer. The captivating characters have had their share of misery and joy and the fans continue to join them in their stories. Last season, fans had to bid goodbye to the ever beloved Patrick Dempsey and his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd.
It was a difficult transition not only for the fans but for Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey in the series. Over the entire period of the show, Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Grey had developed a relationship and got married. However, the circumstances last season left them with a long-distance relationship. Dr. Shepherd decided to move to a different area to pursue his career, but Dr. Grey stayed at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Eventually, Dr. Shepherd realized that Dr. Grey is more important than his own agenda. However, when he was on his way back to her, he got into a car accident and died.
Season 12 offers so many possibilities for the show for fans to chew on. There is a possibility to feature Dr. Grey as an independent woman who survives the death of her husband but there are also speculations that she will find another love interest in the series.
According to Inquisitr, Dr. Grey might meet another man who will distract her from all her woes. Show creator Shonda Rhimes shared a teaser for the upcoming season. Rhimes said that season premiere will be called “Sledgehammer,” which will be a three months lapse from the events of the Season 11 finale.
Moreover, there are relationships that would finally see an end in the upcoming season. Rhimes also said that April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) will both decide to go solo in their journeys. Rhimes announced this not so happy news during the 2015 Televisions Critics Association summer press tour.
During the Season 11 finale, Jackson left April and said that if she decides to leave the hospital and pursue her plans of working in the military, their relationship would be over. April was devastated and was in tears as she asked Jackson if he was serious with his ultimatum. However, before the fans could get some closure on the issue, the season ended.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sarah Drew said that Jackson and April have not broken up just yet in the show. They just left a precipice on the series so they could have options in continuing it on the next season. Drew added that she does not really see it as an official break up. The writers can definitely strike a conversation about the particular subplot of the show, but the lovers’ situation in the series is really tough. Drew also said that she does not think it is the end for April and Jackson, who got married in Season 10. Drew concluded that until April makes a decision, nothing is really certain yet.
In terms of April’s emotions on the ultimatum, Drew said it was the saddest thing for her. That was also the moment when April realized she had been adrift over the past year. She has been very devastated with their baby’s death that she had forgotten her husband in the process of mourning. She no longer had the chance to take care of him.
