In the last episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”, we saw Meredith and Derek getting close once again after their fallout previously. However, it definitely doesn’t seem like the drama surrounding those characters is completely over, as Derek in particular will soon be butting heads with his sister Amelia when he’s back from DC.
Things seem like they’re headed for a disaster right now, as Amelia got her brother’s position as a promotion and became Head of Neurosurgery after Derek accepted his own promotion elsewhere. However, Derek is now coming back, and it’s not clear if he’ll be trying to get his old job back, but there are certainly indications of that. Whether he’ll pull any nasty tricks to get that job done, we have no idea – but hopefully Amelia will keep her eyes open and be prepared.
So far, we’ve seen Derek claiming that he actually isn’t interested in getting back in his old position and will be completely fine working under the supervision of his sister – and while he does say that, Amelia apparently sees through his claims and according to her, he has ulterior motives behind his return. She knows him as a person who’s never comfortable being kept in the second place for anything, so she sees it as very likely that he’ll try to steal back his job from her.
It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen Derek doing something nasty to his sister, as earlier in the season he tried getting her in trouble in order to get his job back, but then realized how much he was actually hurting her and decided to stop. And while Amelia seemingly forgave him for his actions, she definitely doesn’t seem to have forgotten and will likely be wary of his motives in the future. Indeed, it would be a mistake for her to let her guard down at this point.
It was hinted before that the way Derek betrayed his sister would have a profound impact on their relationship, and it wouldn’t be the same anymore. And if those developments are of any indication, this is definitely shaping up to be true. Sure, they might be family – but in the end, few people could possibly live with having been let down like that by a person so close to them. And while Derek might be trying to show remorse for his actions, he’s also the kind of person who would readily feign that in order to get what he wants. Whether or not his intentions are pure, we’ll see soon – but in all likelihood, the writers probably have something planned for Derek that we’re not going to see until it’s too late.
