Showrunner Bruno Heller of the American crime-drama TV series “Gotham” revealed during the ComicCon 2015 that the second season of the show is dubbed as ‘Rise of the Villains.’ Fox has just released two new teasers for the series’ Season 2 and it promises that a slew of monsters is coming to plague the city of Gotham.
The first clip shows Ben Mckenzie’s Detective Jim Gordon taking his job seriously and talking to corrupt Commissioner Loeb, played by Peter Scolari, and promising to take him down. It also featured the noble detective seeking an unlikely alliance with Robin Lord Taylor’s The Penguin character, who now apparently is Gotham’s newest crime lord.
In a span of 40 seconds, Fox was able to give fans a glimpse of the villains and villainess to watch out for in the second season, starting with siblings Theo Galavan, played by James Frain, and Tabitha better known as Tigress, played by Jessica Lucas. The brother-sister tandem is out to wreak havoc in Gotham as they are motivated by a century-old vendetta. Frain and Lucas come into the picture to fill the void that Jada Pinkett Smith, who played Fish Mooney, left.
The teaser alone proved why the show’s next season will serve as a new arena for antagonists to take center stage as it also paves the way for the entry of Cory Micheal Smith’s The Riddler as well as the infamous The Joker, to be played by Cameron Monaghan.
The second clip shows the young and curious Bruce Wayne, played by David Mazouz, going down his father’s secret lair which the boy discovered at the end of the first season. While the 30-second clip does not reveal the boy’s discoveries behind Thomas Wayne’s hidden door, it definitely implies that his Batman roots are to be unraveled in Season 2. There was a huge clamor from fans of the show for the Batman storyline to make its way to the second season and it appears that the writers are doing their best so that they can give viewers what they want.
Judging by the promos, the second season of the DC comics-based TV series is bound to get darker when it returns to TV screens on September 21. Recently, the show made news by announcing the addition of new series regulars Natalie Alyn Lind as Silver St. Cloud and Micheal Chiklis to portray Captain Nathaniel Barnes.
Speaking to Deadline, Heller confirms that the season will also see the character of Amygdala while the possibility of Flamingo and Firefly making an appearance was also teased.
After a lot of hunting down city villains during the first season and a lot more expected to terrorize Gotham, Detective Gordon sure could use a lot of help from Captain Barnes. But it looks like their partnership won’t last that long. Speaking to TV Line, producers of the show spill that the Emmy Award-winning actor will serve as a hero, mentor, and an ally to Gordon, but eventually, he will also become a powerful enemy.
Aside from a host of villains entering Gotham city in the upcoming season, Gordon will be having a hard time making amends for his actions last season. Speaking to Zap2it, Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin dishes that when season 2 begins, Gordon and The Penguin’s relationship will be very much strained.
The 37-year-old actor details that his character really had genuine intentions of building a friendship with Gordon as the detective was one of the two people he trusted in the city, the first being his mother. Taylor admits that The Penguin was deeply hurt when Gordon betrayed him in the season finale, leaving him to die in a hospital while chained to a radiator.
With all the hype there is about the Clown Prince of Crime, especially with Jared Leto portraying the psychotic villain in the 2016 film “Suicide Squad,” it’s no wonder that “Gotham” seems to give the character the spotlight in the upcoming second season.
