GoPro recently updated their actioncam line-up with newer models that support native 4k resolution video recording along with a built-in touchscreen. However, you need to decide which model is the best for accompanying you with your extreme exploits. Take a look at the features of the latest GoPro Hero 4 and GoPro Hero 3 cameras.
Dimensions:
Dimension-wise, there hasn’t been a lot of changes with the size and shapes of the GoPro Hero series. All of these actioncams come with the specific dimensions measuring 41 x 59 x 21/30 mm. Depending on whether you include the size of the lens sticking out. Both the cameras are compatible with the same cases and can fit in the same housing. It is waterproof up to a depth of about 40 meters. A ‘Skeleton-Backdoor’ comes with open sides in order to permit access to the camera ports which is also suited better for audio recording. The GoPro Hero 4 silver variant has a Touch-Screen-friendly Touch Backdoor.
Weight:
In the weight aspect, both these cameras weigh almost the same. You may not even notice the few extra grams while you are out there dirt-biking and surfing. However, if you are more comfortable with the drone-controllable lighter models, you should think whether it will make a difference when you upgrade.
Field of View:
The GoPro cameras are known for their extremely wide field-of-view. They feature the options of shooting in both medium and narrow angles, which further depends on the video resolution. In 35mm terms, the ultra-wide aspect comes at almost 15-mm while the medium comes around 22-mm. Furthermore, the narrow lens is 30-mm.
Lens Aperture:
The GoPro Hero 4 makes use of a fixed f2.8 aperture featuring ultra-wide angle lens. The Hero 3 uses an elemental aspheric glass lens with the same aperture.
Sensor Size:
4:3 sensors with 1/2.3inches supporting 4,000 x 3,000 pixels are available with the new Hero 4 cameras. It is physically smaller compared to the digital cameras. This is the standard aspect for all actioncams where huge lenses are not required with larger sensors. GoPro is yet to release the sensor size on the Hero 3. However, we are aware that it is of a smaller 1/2.7 inch category.
4k Video Recording:
The biggest selling point of the Hero 4 is its ability to record 4k videos. It shoots videos at double the frame rate compared to its other 4k-enabled siblings. The Hero 4 also comes with a powerful image sensor which dominates the 2.7k video recording on the Hero 3.
