It did take the company some time to get things right, and some of their Nexus phones were especially of questionable value, but in the end Google prevailed and kept moving forward. The company had the advantage of being able to afford some failed experiments here and there, which in the end allowed them to make some serious progress with the Nexus devices.
Now that most details about the Merlin and Sailfish are out in the open, we’re curious about what else the company might be preparing behind their closed doors. The fact that the Nexus line is manufactured by other companies and not Google directly makes it a bit easier to get information on upcoming releases, as not everyone has the same tight security practices as Google.
It’s not very likely that we’ll get any details on a new Nexus by the end of this year, as that would make the market a bit too crowded right now.
Google know that there is a very real risk of competing against themselves if they go too far with their releases, so they will likely prefer to quietly wait and see how the current devices perform before bringing out anything else. With that in mind, Android fans interested in getting a new Nexus phone should focus their attention solely on the Merlin and Sailfish, and at least there’s going to be a lot to talk about in those two devices.
